Match Report

Popplewell's Masterful 77 Anchors Sonning 3rd XI to Comfortable Victory

Sonning 3rd XI posted 214 for 9 from their 40 overs before bowling out Pinkneys Green for 151 to secure a convincing 63-run victory in Division 8B at Waingels College on Saturday.

After Pinkneys Green won the toss and inserted Sonning, the home side found themselves in early difficulty at 32 for 2. Harrison Lott had provided a solid start with 13 from 26 balls before falling caught off Anthony Fuller, while Jameel Ahamed was run out for 6 after a slow accumulation from 29 deliveries. It was Rahul Sood who injected urgency into the innings, striking five fours in a quickfire 28 from just 23 balls, putting on 50 for the third wicket with Hugo Popplewell before Ben Snapes bowled him.

Popplewell then took centre stage with an innings of genuine quality. The number four batsman compiled a superb 77 from 78 balls, lacing nine boundaries in an effort that formed the backbone of the Sonning total. His most productive stand came alongside Shamitha Widanapathirana, the pair adding 79 for the fifth wicket to transform the score from 88 for 4 to 167 for 5. Widanapathirana contributed a valuable 21 from 34 balls before falling caught by Snapes off James Elam.

When Popplewell was eventually bowled by Elam for 77, Sonning were 170 for 6 and the innings threatened to fizzle out. Three wickets fell for just ten runs as the score slipped to 180 for 8, with Daniel Edwards stumped by James Hemmings off Elam and Sam Taylor bowled by Anil Mirza. However, Asad Imam launched a blistering late assault, smashing two sixes in a rapid 19 from 15 balls, and together with Jack Durrant (11 not out) added 32 for the ninth wicket to push the total beyond 200. Elam finished with impressive figures of 4 for 56 from his eight overs, while Snapes took 2 for 40.

Pinkneys Green's reply began promisingly as Sridhar Balachandar attacked from the outset, cracking five fours in a brisk 29 from 32 balls. He and captain Hemmings put on 46 for the opening wicket before Durrant found the edge and Edwards took the catch behind the stumps. Durrant struck again immediately, bowling Karthik Ponnuchamy for a golden duck to leave the visitors 46 for 2.

Hemmings battled patiently for 24 from 58 deliveries, but Sam Taylor proved the decisive bowler, dismissing both Hemmings — caught by Edwards — and Arun Ramachandran lbw for 14 to reduce Pinkneys Green to 88 for 4. Taylor's excellent spell of 3 for 22 from eight overs, including two maidens, kept a tight grip on proceedings. Ben Snapes showed resistance with a determined 32 from 50 balls, and his partnership of 34 with Imran Tariq (21) briefly threatened to make the chase interesting, but three run-outs in the lower order told the story of mounting pressure from Sonning's fielders. Captain Arun Kumar Pera accounted for Tariq's run out, while Harrison Lott was involved in dismissing both Fuller and contributing in the field.

Aashmit Ghosh rounded off the bowling performance with 2 for 29 from his eight overs, removing Anil Mirza — caught by Imam — and Jack Lampard, caught by the ever-present Edwards who finished with three catches behind the stumps. Asad Imam also deserved credit for his tidy seven-over spell of 0 for 22 with two maidens, which applied relentless pressure through the middle overs. Pinkneys Green were eventually bowled out for 151 in the 37th over, handing Sonning a well-deserved victory and the full 22 league points.
