Match Report

Stingers Fall Short as Finchampstead Claim Victory at King George's Field

Sonning U11 Stingers suffered a defeat at home on 18th July as Finchampstead won the Girls U11 Challenge fixture at King George's Field. After winning the toss and electing to bat, the visitors posted 69 for 2 from their 16 overs before restricting Sonning to 58 for 5 in reply.

Finchampstead's innings was heavily bolstered by extras, with 63 of their 69 runs coming without the bat needing to make contact. Wides and no-balls proved costly for the Stingers, particularly during Eleanor Hatchett-Walker's spell, which conceded 23 runs from two overs including seven wides and four no-balls. Aarohi Tyagi's two overs also leaked six wides as Sonning struggled to maintain their line and length early on.

The brightest spot with the ball for the home side came from Megan Symes, who delivered the most economical spell of the innings. The wicketkeeper turned bowler conceded just five runs from her two overs and remarkably bowled a maiden — a fine achievement at any level of cricket. Jessica Hawkins matched Symes's figures of 2-0-5-0, delivering a tidy and disciplined spell that gave the Finchampstead batters little to work with.

Isabella Partridge was the only Sonning bowler to claim wickets, picking up both dismissals in her two-over allocation. Despite conceding eight no-balls, her ability to take wickets provided a valuable contribution. Captain Ruby Cross also bowled tidily, returning figures of 2-0-10-0 without conceding a single wide or no-ball.

For Finchampstead, Dulcie Douglas top-scored with 13 runs from 13 balls, while Kaira Anand contributed a brisk 12 from 11 deliveries including the only boundary of the innings. Captain Annabel Hillan added a useful 9 from 14 balls batting at number eight.

In reply, Jessica Hawkins produced the standout batting performance for the Stingers, striking a team-high 17 runs from 15 balls with two boundaries. She looked composed at the crease and was one of only three Sonning batters who were not dismissed. Aarohi Tyagi provided solid support with 12 from 14 balls, including a boundary, as the pair offered the most resistance in the middle order.

The Stingers lost wickets at regular intervals, however, with five batters falling across the innings. Eleanor Hatchett-Walker was dismissed twice during her 18-ball stay at the crease, managing just four runs, as Finchampstead's bowlers applied consistent pressure. Annabel Hillan and Kaira Anand were the pick of the visiting attack, each claiming a wicket while conceding seven and five runs respectively from their two-over spells.

Despite generous extras from Finchampstead's bowlers — 46 in total, including 14 wides from Jessica Hutchins alone — the Stingers could not close the 11-run gap, finishing on 58 for 5. It was a match where discipline with the ball proved decisive, and Sonning will know that tightening up their bowling accuracy will be key to improving their results in the competition.
