Match Report
Parker's Valiant 36 Not Enough as Sonning Women Fall to Binfield
Sonning Women's 1st XI suffered a defeat at the FWE Goates Memorial Ground on Sunday, posting 107 for 8 from their 25 overs before Binfield chased down the target with five wickets and 16 balls to spare in this Division 3 A encounter.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, Sonning made a brisk start through openers Rita Green and Geethika Jyothis, who put on 24 for the first wicket. Jyothis struck three boundaries in a rapid 12 from just 10 balls before falling caught off the bowling of Binfield captain Manisha Naik. The innings then lurched into difficulty as Chloe Bailey was trapped lbw by Naik for a golden duck in the same over, leaving Sonning 24 for 2.
Green battled on to 19, hitting two fours from her 24 deliveries, but when she departed caught at 43 for 3 and Elinor Longridge followed soon after lbw to Amelia Hart for 6, Sonning found themselves in real trouble at 45 for 4. The dismissal of Elizabeth Van Deventer for just 2, caught off Hart, deepened the crisis further at 48 for 5.
Sophie Parker then produced the innings of the match, counter-attacking with authority. The wicketkeeper compiled a superb 36 from 35 balls, lacing five boundaries as she added a crucial 49 for the sixth wicket with Rebecca Malhi. Malhi's contribution of 4 from 33 balls was selfless rather than eye-catching, but the partnership dragged Sonning back into contention. Parker was eventually caught by Grace Gamble off Lucy Jeffery's bowling at 101 for 8, and though Gill Bailey chipped in with an unbeaten 7 including a boundary, Sonning's total of 107 always looked below par.
Binfield's reply got off to a strong foundation as Jessica Jackson (16 off 32 balls) and Serena Evans (21 off 44) compiled an opening stand of 40. Sonning's bowling discipline was undermined by extras, with 42 runs coming from the sundries column — including 30 wides — effectively gifting Binfield nearly 40 per cent of their target without requiring a scoring shot.
Geethika Jyothis was the standout performer with the ball for Sonning, delivering a miserly spell of 5-3-7-1, clean bowling Evans to break the second-wicket partnership of 37. Rita Green also made an impact, claiming 2 for 18 from her five overs, including the caught-and-bowled of Gamble for 13 and the wicket of Elizabeth Ullstein for a duck, well held by Parker behind the stumps. Elizabeth Van Deventer picked up the scalp of Jackson with a caught-and-bowled of her own, while Chloe Bailey bowled Alison Wade to claim Binfield's fifth wicket at 100.
Those late wickets briefly raised Sonning hopes, but Monika Nicholls steered the hosts home with an unbeaten 12, supported by captain Naik on 3 not out. The sheer volume of extras proved decisive, handing Binfield a comfortable victory despite losing half their batting line-up. Captain Katie Barrows and her side will rue the wayward bowling in the second innings, with seven different bowlers used but none able to stem the flow of wides that ultimately tilted the contest firmly in Binfield's favour.
