Scorchers Chase Down 148 as Dowse and Maddi Seal Victory at Knowl Hill

Sonning U13 Scorchers secured a fine six-wicket victory over Goring at Knowl Hill on Thursday evening, chasing down 148 with seven balls to spare in their U13 League Pool 8 fixture. After Goring captain Elliott Rhind anchored his side's innings with an unbeaten 39, it was skipper Joseph Dowse's blistering 30 off just 16 balls and a composed unbeaten 16 from Tejus Maddi that guided the Scorchers home.

Goring won the toss and elected to bat, and their openers made the most of the decision. Rhind and Henry Bowers put on 52 for the first wicket, with Bowers striking three fours in a brisk 20 off 16 deliveries before being stumped by Dowse off the bowling of Henry Bright. That breakthrough brought Rafe Rughani to the crease, and the number three batted with purpose, accumulating 19 from 23 balls including three boundaries as he anchored the middle overs alongside Rhind.

The Scorchers' bowlers fought back impressively through the middle of the innings. Henry Bright was the pick of the attack in his first spell, returning figures of 2-16 from three overs as he removed both Bowers and Archie McClelland. Jamie Dollinger then ripped through the lower-middle order, claiming 3-15 from his two overs, including the key wickets of Rughani, Danny Tiley, and Oliver Smith. Frederick Parkes bowled tidily for his 1-8 from two overs, while Ibrahim Ali Mir wrapped up the tail with two wickets in his 1.2 overs. A late cameo of 18 off 14 balls from Dexter Rhind, batting at number eleven, pushed Goring to 147 all out in 19.2 overs, though 35 extras — including 22 wides — inflated the total.

Dowse was also outstanding behind the stumps, pouching three catches to go with the stumping, ensuring the Scorchers were clinical in the field whenever chances presented themselves.

The chase began shakily when Henry Bright was run out for 1 with the score on 18, and when Ibrahim Ali Mir fell bowled by Samuel Procter for 8, the Scorchers were 39-2 and in need of a partnership. Saurav Sivaram had been watchful at the other end, and it was his steady presence that held the innings together. He compiled 20 from 30 balls with three fours before retiring not out, having done the hard work of stabilising the reply.

Dowse then transformed the contest. Coming in at number four, the captain played with authority from the outset, crashing six fours in a 16-ball assault that yielded 30 runs before he too retired not out. He was at the heart of a crucial 75-run partnership for the third wicket alongside Siddharth Kumar, who contributed 7 from 8 balls before falling caught by Dexter Rhind. Eshan Wang Kumar added a useful 13 off 12 balls, striking three fours to keep the scoring rate healthy.

With 27 still needed, Namit Desai and Tejus Maddi came together and guided the Scorchers home with composure beyond their years. Maddi was particularly impressive, finding the boundary four times in his unbeaten 16 off 14 balls, while Desai played the supporting role perfectly with an unbeaten 10 from 14 deliveries. Goring's bowlers struggled for control, conceding 45 extras including 20 wides and 20 no-balls, which ultimately proved the difference in a match where the margin was just three runs. The Scorchers reached 150-4 in 18.5 overs to claim five league points and a well-deserved victory.
