Match Report

The weather was always going to intervene in this match but most importantly we wanted to bring the right attitude and a view of nurturing the future of Sonning into the team.

We introduced Liam Smith and Dan Medhurst into the team this week. Both very good Cricketers but regrettably Dan neither got a bowl nor bat but contributed immensely with sharp fielding and being magnanimous when it came to advising me whether Jackson or he should return at the death.

Liam Smith showed application with the bat, fielded very well and had figures of 3-1-4-0.

I lost the toss and luckily we were inserted. A decision I would have made had I won the toss. I have not won a toss in three attempts to date.

Once again our openers showed great resolve and steely determination with an opening partnership of 125 runs! Both Smith and Benning batted beautifully with only Benning looking for the threes and frequently lapping Smith. I am so pleased that Benjo got his first League 50. Smith made a very fluent 66!

In context we managed a further 142 runs for the loss of seven wickets, something we need to improve upon. We managed 267 for 8 wickets with Harvey Grout scoring a proper Cricketing 67 not out followed by 13.3-1-53-6! I was most impressed with Harvey’s teamwork in getting a total as we lost wickets.

We worked very hard on a difficult day for both teams. Akin to last week when Jackson completed a brilliant bit of fielding at Hampton Hill, Retief’s direct hit resulting in a run out turned the game.

A fitter more lithe Steve Hill has been very impressive over the last two games and manoeuvred beautifully taking three catches and saving many extras. His agility along with being one of the first to join in the training sessions, giving me advice with a level head has made him invaluable to the team.

Harvey took his sixth and we made it two in two. Dan Medhurst and Liam Smith along with Jackson did brilliantly. Good catches from Stevens made the win possible. The openers did fantastically well and an all round performance from Harvey for once made my man of the match an easy choice.

Dan, Nigel, Liam and the rest of Team Sonning well done!!!
