Sabres Fall Short at Scours Lane as West Reading Claim Victory

Sonning U11 Sabres travelled to Scours Lane on 19 July for their U11 T16 Pairs League fixture against West Reading, and despite a spirited response with the bat, ultimately fell 11 runs short in their pursuit of 113.

Captain Zille Ansari won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that initially appeared shrewd as the Sabres' opening bowling pair kept West Reading firmly in check. Jamie Dollinger was outstanding with the new ball, conceding just four runs from his two overs, while Ansari himself was tidy at the other end, giving away only five. West Reading's openers Parth Singhal and Vishruth Sowmyan managed a combined three runs from their 24 balls, leaving the home side struggling at the top of the order.

The middle overs told a different story, however, as extras began to mount. Suvir Jaryal claimed a wicket but was troubled by his radar, sending down ten wides in his two-over spell. The Sabres' discipline wavered, and West Reading's total was swelled significantly by 57 extras — including 30 byes and 22 wides — which proved decisive in the final reckoning.

West Reading captain Noman Khan provided the most destructive innings of the match, smashing 23 from 18 balls with four boundaries as he came in at number seven and gave the home side's total real impetus. Charlie Bright complemented Khan's aggression with a brisk 15 from 13 deliveries, hitting two fours. Joseph Parker was the pick of the Sabres' bowlers, returning figures of 2-10 from his two overs, while Muhammad Shah and Owen Simmons each chipped in with a wicket apiece.

In reply, Sonning needed 113 from their 16 overs and made a positive start. Muhammad Shah struck 10 from just 10 balls at the top of the order, and Jamie Dollinger continued his fine all-round display with 12 from 12 balls, dispatching two boundaries. Suvir Jaryal added a useful 8, but the Sabres lost wickets at regular intervals, with six dismissals costing them 30 penalty runs that ultimately proved the difference.

Joseph Parker provided the late fireworks, top-scoring for the Sabres with an unbeaten 15 from 11 balls, including two fours, as he attempted to haul his side back into contention. Vayun Sori offered valuable support with 9, but with Charlie Bright bowling a miserly final spell of 2-3-1 including a maiden, and Parth Singhal conceding just four runs from his two overs, West Reading's bowlers held their nerve when it mattered most.

The Sabres ultimately finished on 101 for 6, falling 11 runs short of their target. While there were encouraging individual performances — Parker's all-round contribution and Dollinger's economy with the ball standing out — the excessive extras conceded in the field and the regular loss of wickets with the bat proved too great a hurdle to overcome on this occasion.
