Match Report

Coutts' Defiant 62 Not Enough as Sonning 2nd XI Fall Short at Marlow

Sonning 2nd XI travelled to Marlow Cricket Club on Saturday for their Division 4B fixture and, after being inserted on winning the toss, posted a competitive 231 for 9 from their 52 overs. However, Marlow's batting line-up proved equal to the task, chasing down the target with three wickets in hand and 3.3 overs to spare.

Asked to bat first, Sonning openers Duncan Parr and Gaurav Jayan set about building a platform with a measured first-wicket stand of 64. The pair reached fifty in 117 balls before Parr fell bowled by Lewis Moss for 26 off 71 deliveries. Jayan followed shortly after for 31, caught by Marlow skipper Shaz Aslam off his own bowling, and when captain Dan Anderson was caught for 8 off Isaac Looker, Sonning had slipped to 87 for 3.

David Coutts then assumed responsibility for the innings with a composed knock that would prove the backbone of Sonning's total. A brief wobble saw Kavya Panchal depart for a duck and Jameel Ahamed trapped lbw by Ishtiaq Khan for just 1, leaving Sonning at 137 for 6 and in danger of falling well short. Raoul Harding provided some impetus with a brisk 17 off 15 balls, including a six, in a partnership of 37 with Coutts before being bowled by Looker.

It was John Rimmer who gave the innings its second wind, adding 46 for the seventh wicket alongside Coutts. Rimmer struck three fours and a six in his enterprising 27 off 26 balls before falling lbw to Khan, who finished with impressive figures of 3 for 75 from his 15 overs. Coutts reached his fifty in 62 balls and went on to make 62 before being caught at 213 for 8. A late cameo from Jack Durrant, who cracked three fours in an unbeaten 12 off just five deliveries, helped Sonning to a total of 231 that looked as though it might be enough to defend.

Marlow's reply got off to a flying start as Alec Bussell attacked from the outset, racing to 33 off 42 balls with seven boundaries. He and Will Peacock put on 52 for the first wicket inside 11 overs before Jameel Ahamed struck twice, having Bussell caught by Harding and then trapping Peacock lbw for 19, reducing Marlow to 63 for 2.

The hosts regrouped through Graeme Paskins and Ben Paskins, who combined for a crucial third-wicket partnership of 71. Ben Paskins was the aggressor, reaching his fifty in just 42 balls with nine fours before being caught by Wasim Amin off Jack Durrant for 51. Duncan Parr then sparked a mini-collapse, picking up three wickets as Marlow tumbled from 149 for 4 to 175 for 7, with wicketkeeper Sophie Smith taking two catches behind the stumps and Gaurav Jayan snaring two in the field.

At 175 for 7, Sonning sensed an opportunity, but Graeme Paskins held firm and found an able ally in Lewis Moss. The unbroken eighth-wicket pair added 57 in just 33 balls to seal the chase. Paskins anchored the innings superbly with an unbeaten 72 off 105 balls, laced with eight fours, while Moss contributed a rapid 22 off 16 deliveries to take Marlow to 232 for 7 in 46.3 overs. Parr's 3 for 52 and Durrant's 2 for 36 were the pick of the Sonning attack, but ultimately the visitors were left to reflect on a defeat in a match they had been well placed to win.
