Match Report

Stingers Claim Comprehensive Victory as Bailey Stars with the Ball

Sonning Stingers Soft Ball secured a convincing win over Wargrave in the Berkshire Women's Softball Performance league, posting 93 for 1 before bowling out the visitors for just 57 to claim all three points at home on 25th June.

Captain Sharon Fleming won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that proved fully justified as the Stingers made the most of generous Wargrave bowling. Extras played a significant role in the innings, with 36 runs coming from wides and no-balls as the visiting attack struggled for accuracy. Annie Meeks and Sandy So were particularly wayward, conceding 10 wides apiece, while Madeleine Bayley sent down eight no-balls in her two overs.

Elinor Longridge was the standout performer with the bat, striking a brisk 16 off just 11 balls, including two boundaries, to top-score for the Stingers. Rita Green provided excellent middle-order impetus with 12 off 12 deliveries, clearing the rope for the only six of the innings. Fleming contributed a handy 7 off 7 balls with a boundary of her own, while opener Chloe Bailey matched that tally at the top of the order. Jo Goodman was the sole Wargrave bowler to take a wicket, finishing with economical figures of 1 for 2 from her single over.

Faced with a target of 94, Wargrave's reply never gained any momentum. Chloe Bailey, having opened the batting, proved devastating with the ball, returning remarkable figures of 3 for 4 from her two overs. Her spell ripped through the top and middle order, leaving Wargrave in deep trouble early in their chase.

Grace Phillips provided excellent support, claiming 2 for 11 from 2.2 overs and bowling the only maiden of the match. Sandhya Sharma and Rebecca Mahli each chipped in with a wicket apiece to ensure there was no route back for the visitors. In total, Wargrave lost nine wickets during their innings, with Jo Goodman and Sandy So both dismissed twice under the pairs format, while Charlie Spencer also fell on two occasions.

Wargrave captain Zoe Howe showed the most resistance with 12 off 13 balls, finding the boundary twice in a spirited effort from seventh in the order. Sam Hood struck an unbeaten 6 including a four, and Madeleine Bayley made 8 with a boundary, but these contributions were too little, too late. The middle order crumbled, with several batters failing to convert starts against disciplined Stingers bowling.

Rita Green deserved particular mention for her tidy spell of 2 overs for just 6 runs without conceding a single extra, applying sustained pressure during the middle overs. The collective bowling effort restricted Wargrave to 37 runs off the bat, with 20 extras making up the remainder of their total. The 36-run margin of victory underlined the Stingers' dominance in all three departments on a productive afternoon in the league campaign.
