Match Report

Sonning 2nd XI Collapse Hands Holmer Green Comfortable Victory

Sonning 2nd XI's promising start at Holmer Green Cricket Club on Saturday was undone by a devastating middle-order collapse, as the hosts chased down 109 with seven wickets in hand and more than 31 overs to spare in this Division 4B encounter.

Captain Dan Anderson won the toss and elected to bat, and the decision initially appeared vindicated as openers Aseem Shafi and Gaurav Jayan put on 53 for the first wicket. Jayan looked the more fluent of the pair, striking four boundaries and a six during his knock of 32 from 45 balls, while Shafi contributed 11 from 19 deliveries before falling lbw to Daniel Little. The opening stand had given Sonning a solid platform, but what followed was a sharp decline from which they never recovered.

Harry Stephens proved the chief destroyer with the ball for Holmer Green, returning figures of 4-23 from his seven overs. He removed the dangerous Jayan lbw and then had Max Murphy stumped by wicketkeeper Richard Wallace for a duck, leaving Sonning reeling at 63-3 with two wickets falling on the same score. Anderson steadied things briefly with 16 from 33 balls, including three fours, but when Andrew Richmond bowled the skipper at 80-4, the floodgates opened.

Richmond was virtually unplayable in his spell, finishing with remarkable figures of 5-24 from 5.5 overs. After dismissing Anderson, he bowled Harrison Lott for a duck before cleaning up the tail with ruthless efficiency. Jameel Ahamed offered some resistance with 9 from 28 balls, and his 20-run partnership with Alexander Fleming for the sixth wicket briefly threatened to push Sonning beyond a competitive total.

Fleming provided the only late fireworks, smashing 13 from just nine balls with three boundaries, but his dismissal — caught by Jordan Day off Stephens — triggered a terminal slide. The last four wickets fell for just five runs as Richmond and Stephens shared the spoils, bowling Sonning out for 108 in only 24.5 overs. The 27 extras conceded by Holmer Green, including 20 wides, had flattered the total somewhat.

The chase was barely a contest. Zebby Mahmood fell early, caught by Fleming off Jameel Ahamed for 8, and when Max Murphy had Jason Talmer caught by Ollie Terry with the score on 24, Sonning had a glimmer of hope at 24-2. That optimism was swiftly extinguished by Stephens, who followed his four-wicket haul with an unbeaten 43 from 40 balls, lacing seven fours and three sixes in a display of aggressive strokeplay.

Scott Norwood was equally destructive, plundering 38 from just 23 deliveries with five fours and a six. His third-wicket partnership of 67 with Stephens effectively settled the match. Norwood was eventually run out by Aashmit Ghosh with the score on 91, but the damage was done. Jordan Day saw the hosts home with an unbeaten 14 from 10 balls, Holmer Green reaching 111-3 in just 13.2 overs to claim a comprehensive victory and all 22 match points.
