Aadil Khan's Five-Wicket Haul Fires Sonning 2nd XI to Comfortable Victory at Nettlebed
Sonning 2nd XI produced a dominant all-round display to defeat Henley 3rd XI by eight wickets at Nettlebed in Division 5B, with Aadil Khan's devastating spell of 5-11 dismantling the home side's batting order before Raoul Harding's explosive 47 sealed the chase in just 11.4 overs.
Henley captain Chris Dyer won the toss and opted to bat first, but his side quickly found themselves under pressure from Sonning's disciplined opening attack. John Rimmer set the tone from one end, conceding just 19 runs from his nine overs while claiming two important wickets. He had Freddie Bowlby caught by Duncan Parr and then removed Dylan Price, caught by Dan Anderson, as Henley slipped from 30 for nought to 36 for two.
Ghulam Abbas was equally parsimonious at the other end, bowling three maidens in his six-over spell and picking up the wicket of opener Luke Loveland, who had top-scored in the early exchanges with 15 from 36 balls. Wicketkeeper Ankit Sharma pouched the catch behind the stumps, and at 48 for three, Henley were already struggling to build any meaningful momentum.
The introduction of Aadil Khan proved the decisive turning point. The medium-pacer was virtually unplayable, ripping through the middle and lower order with remarkable figures of 5-11 from seven overs, including two maidens. He trapped Mehar Ali lbw for a duck, had Sean Taylor caught by Anderson for two, bowled Francesca Clarke for nought, and then completed his haul by dismissing Atharv Gupta and Taimoor-Ali Baig, both caught by skipper Robert Mosley. Only Haider-Ali Baig offered any sustained resistance for Henley, batting through much of the innings for 27 from 69 balls with five fours before being stumped by Sharma off Duncan Parr's bowling.
Henley were bowled out for just 75 in 31.3 overs, with Duncan Parr's tidy spell of 1-14 from 7.3 overs — including four maidens — complementing the excellent work at the other end. It was a thoroughly disciplined bowling and fielding performance from Sonning, with Aadil Khan also contributing a sharp run out of Dyer to add to his five wickets.
The chase began inauspiciously when captain Mosley was caught by Loveland off Taimoor-Ali Baig's bowling without scoring, dismissed off just the first ball of the innings. That brought Harding to the crease, and what followed was a masterclass in aggressive batting. Harding took the Henley attack apart with six fours and three sixes in a blistering knock of 47 from only 31 deliveries, putting together a match-defining partnership of 65 with Parr for the second wicket.
Parr anchored the innings with an unbeaten 26 from 37 balls, striking five fours of his own as the pair made the target look trivial. Harding eventually fell caught by Loveland off Gupta's bowling, but by then the damage was well and truly done. Anderson saw Sonning home with a composed one not out, as the visitors reached 79 for two with more than 33 overs to spare — a thoroughly convincing victory that earned them a full 22 league points.
