Match Report

Sabres' Batting Firepower Proves Too Much for Windsor in T20 League Clash

Sonning U15 Sabres posted an imposing 164 for 6 from their 20 overs before bowling Windsor out for 131 to claim a comprehensive victory in the BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge at Waingels College on Monday evening.

Windsor captain Mahaan Sandhu won the toss and inserted the Sabres, but his bowlers were made to pay as three Sonning batsmen reached 30 and retired not out. Wicketkeeper Ethan Towner set the tone at the top of the order, striking two sixes in a brisk 19 off 14 balls before being bowled by Joe Craig, with the score on 30. That brought Kanishka Suriarachchi and Henry Johnson together, and the pair had already laid a solid foundation before both retired having reached their milestones.

Suriarachchi was the more measured of the two, accumulating 30 from 24 deliveries with three fours and a six, while Johnson was devastating in his assault, smashing 31 off just 18 balls, clearing the rope twice and finding the boundary on two further occasions. Their contributions lifted the score to 98 before the next wicket fell, with Henry Robson arriving and immediately continuing the onslaught. Robson's explosive 30 off 20 balls, which included three fours and two sixes, pushed the Sabres beyond 150 in a second-wicket stand of 68 with Edward Jones, who chipped in with a handy 8 off 7 balls before being caught by Sam Jones off James Endacott.

Captain Christopher Dowse added a useful 11 before being bowled by Harshil Sharma, and though the Sabres lost a cluster of wickets in the closing overs — with Reyansh Setia, Partha Pal and Nishal Jarugu all falling cheaply — the damage had already been done. Windsor's bowling was expensive across the board, with 20 extras conceded including 15 wides. Zane Holmes was the pick of the attack with 2 for 19 from his three overs.

Windsor's reply began promisingly as Muhammad Abdullah Atari struck two early boundaries in a rapid 9 off 6 balls, putting on 23 with Sharma for the opening wicket. However, Darshil Saxena broke through when Affan Tak held the catch to dismiss Atari, and the innings quickly unravelled. Tak then produced a match-defining spell of 3 for 10 from his three overs, including a maiden, removing Endacott (caught by Robson for 3), captain Sandhu (caught by Dowse for 1) and Craig (bowled for a duck) in quick succession. At 29 for 4, Windsor were in deep trouble.

Sharma and Holmes steadied the ship with a defiant fifth-wicket partnership of 46, the best stand of Windsor's innings. Holmes contributed 16 from 22 balls while Sharma batted with composure at the other end, reaching 31 off 31 deliveries with three fours. Partha Pal broke the stand by bowling Holmes, and when Sharma was the last man dismissed — bowled by Robson to end the innings — Windsor's resistance was effectively over.

A late flourish from Eddie Winch (14 off 13 balls, including a six) and Yuvraj Sidhu (15 not out) briefly raised Windsor hopes as they put on 37 for the eighth wicket, but Dowse wrapped up proceedings emphatically with two wickets in his single over, having Winch caught by Jarugu before bowling Aiyuush Kakaria. Robson then claimed the final wicket with only one ball of the 20th over needed, as Windsor were dismissed for 131, falling 33 runs short. The Sabres used eight bowlers in a well-managed team effort, with Tak's incisive three-wicket haul and Dowse's clinical finish the highlights of a dominant all-round display.
