Spartans Chase Down 121 as Middle Order Fires at Datchet
Sonning U13 Spartans secured a convincing victory in their BYCL Under 13 Development League fixture at The Wally Gage Memorial Ground on 7th August, chasing down Datchet's total of 120 with 25 runs to spare in this pairs format encounter.
Captain Shubh Vedalankar won the toss and elected to field, a decision that ultimately proved shrewd as his bowling attack shared the wickets around effectively. Datchet's innings was built around two contributions of 18 apiece from opener Ahorshi Burman, who struck two fours and a six from just ten deliveries, and captain Ali Meo, who found the boundary three times during his 12-ball knock. Jishnu Sathya added 11 from 11 balls in between, but the remaining Datchet batters struggled to build momentum against the Spartans' varied attack.
All eight Sonning bowlers took to the crease in a truly shared effort, with Vedanth Vasanth claiming the best figures of 2-22 from his two overs. Siddharth Kumar was the most economical of the group, conceding just 10 runs from his two overs while also picking up a wicket. Wickets were also taken by Mikhail Jafri, Vedalankar, Sibikumar Muthukumaran, Toby Whitehead, and Eshan Wang Kumar. Extras proved a significant factor in Datchet's total, with 57 added to the scorebook — 41 of those coming from wides — as the young Sonning bowlers occasionally struggled with their lines.
The Spartans' reply began steadily if unspectacularly, with openers Jafri and Elias Haidari contributing 3 and 5 respectively. It was the arrival of Sibikumar Muthukumaran at number three that shifted the momentum decisively. Muthukumaran played the innings of the match, blazing 24 from just 11 balls with three boundaries, setting the tone for what became a dominant middle-order display.
Siddharth Kumar continued the onslaught at number four, matching Muthukumaran's aggression with an unbeaten 21 from 13 deliveries, peppered with four fours. The pair's contributions swung the match firmly in Sonning's favour, putting the Datchet attack under sustained pressure.
Vedalankar then produced a captain's knock at number six, smashing 19 off 11 balls including two sixes and a four — the most explosive hitting of the evening. Eshan Wang Kumar maintained the assault further down the order, matching Kumar's tally of 21, this time from 15 balls with four boundaries. Between them, the middle order quartet of Muthukumaran, Kumar, Vedalankar, and Wang Kumar plundered 85 runs from just 50 deliveries.
Datchet's bowlers toiled hard, with Jishnu Sathya claiming three wickets in his two overs and Rehandeep Sohal taking two, but the opposition attack was also generous with extras, conceding 45 in total including 39 wides. The Spartans closed on 145 for 7, comfortably surpassing the target and collecting a full 20 league points — a thoroughly professional run chase underpinned by fearless stroke-play through the middle order.
