Sonning 2nd XI Outgunned by Lines Century as Marlow Cruise to Victory

Sonning 2nd XI were on the wrong end of a commanding display at King George's Field on Saturday as Marlow 2nd XI, powered by a superb century from Phil Lines, posted 300 for 5 before bowling the hosts out for 152 in this Division 4B encounter.

Marlow captain Shaz Aslam won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first, a decision vindicated almost immediately as opener Phil Lines and Ben Ralphs set about the Sonning attack with relish. The pair put on 108 for the first wicket, with Ralphs the more aggressive of the two, striking 12 fours in a rapid 56 from just 48 balls before being bowled by Ethan Towner. Towner struck again in the same over, removing Ben Paskins for a golden duck to offer Sonning a brief flicker of hope at 108 for 2.

That optimism proved short-lived. Lines found an equally willing partner in Harry Bussell, and the pair constructed a devastating third-wicket stand of 130 that broke the back of the Sonning bowling. Lines was imperious throughout, reaching his century and going on to make 124 from 132 deliveries, an innings peppered with 17 fours and a six. Bussell contributed a composed 43 from 62 balls before being caught by Jacob Fitton off Jack Durrant's bowling with the score on 238.

Durrant finished with the best figures among the Sonning bowlers, taking 2 for 74 from his nine overs, while Towner's two wickets came at a cost of 46 from five overs. Indeveer Sahota was the most economical, conceding just 33 from his nine overs, though he went wicketless. Sam Taylor claimed the final scalp, having Tom Hogan stumped by Harrison Lott for a breezy 28 off 16 balls, but his figures of 1 for 72 reflected a difficult afternoon. The 35 extras — including 30 wides — further compounded Sonning's woes in the field.

Chasing 301 was always going to be a tall order, and Sonning's pursuit got off to a poor start when Indeveer Sahota was caught by wicketkeeper Harry Bussell off Fazal Ali for just 1, with only 10 on the board. Captain Dan Anderson battled through 26 balls for his 7 before being bowled by Tom Whitaker, and when Shamitha Widanapathirana was caught at 63 for 3, the required rate had already spiralled beyond reach.

Jacob Fitton provided the lone resistance of genuine substance at the top of the order. The opener showed patience and application, accumulating 51 from 85 balls with six boundaries, anchoring partnerships of 26 with Anderson and 27 with Widanapathirana. His dismissal — caught by Bussell off Isaac Looker with the score on 94 — effectively ended any lingering hopes of an unlikely upset.

Jameel Ahamed kept fighting with a determined 29 from 58 deliveries, sharing a 40-run fifth-wicket stand with Asad Imam, who made 15. But once that partnership was broken, the innings folded rapidly. Isaac Looker was the destroyer-in-chief, ripping through the lower order with figures of 4 for 17 from 6.3 overs, including the wickets of Fitton, Ahamed, Sam Taylor and Jack Durrant in quick succession. Three wickets fell at 150 as Sonning collapsed from 134 for 5 to 152 all out in 42.3 overs, handing Marlow a comprehensive 148-run victory.
