Match Report
Kestrels Outgunned by Dominant Maidenhead & Bray in South League Fixture
Sonning U9 Kestrels endured a tough evening at Maidenhead and Bray Cricket Club on Friday 13 June, as the home side's Under 9's Stags posted a commanding total to secure a comprehensive victory in the BYCL Under 9 Super 8s South division.
Having won the toss and elected to field, Maidenhead & Bray's bowlers set about restricting the Kestrels from the outset. The visiting side, captained by Thoren Alford, were inserted on a ground where the home team clearly felt confident chasing. The decision proved astute as the Stags' attack shared the wickets around effectively, claiming 19 dismissals across the 20-over innings.
The standout bowling performance of the match came from Khaatkvik Kumar Ganta, who produced a devastating spell of 2-1 from his two overs, including a maiden — a remarkable feat at this age group — and claimed five wickets in total. Hudson Swadling (2-4) and Ran Ball (2-4) were equally miserly at the top of the attack, while Murray Ballantyne chipped in with figures of 2-3 from his two overs. Teddy Flaxman Johnson (2-6) and Rohan Achappa (2-14) also contributed two wickets apiece.
For the Kestrels, scoring opportunities were hard to come by. Thigal Kapilan top-scored with 6 runs from 10 balls, including a boundary, while Arthur Miles (5 off 14), Leopold Ellis (5 off 16) and Kiyaan Gupta (5 off 16) all showed resilience. Max Chapman struck a four in his knock of 4, and captain Alford contributed 4 from 10 deliveries. The total of 78 included 41 extras — 30 of which were wides — which kept the scoreboard ticking when the bat struggled.
The Stags' reply was emphatic. Louis Stevens led the charge with a blistering 17 from just 8 balls, cracking four boundaries in an innings that set the tone. Khaatkvik Kumar Ganta, following up his superb bowling, smashed 16 off 8 deliveries, including two fours and a six. Teddy Flaxman Johnson matched that tally with 16 from 16 balls, also finding the boundary rope twice and clearing it once. Oliver Webb (15 off 16), Ran Ball (15 off 14) and Murray Ballantyne (13 off 10) all weighed in with confident contributions as the home side raced to 179 from their 20 overs, losing only four wickets.
The Kestrels' bowling attack found conditions difficult, with extras again featuring prominently — 65 in total, including 39 wides and 24 byes. Kiyaan Gupta was the pick of the Sonning bowlers, returning figures of 2-8 from two tidy overs without conceding a wide or no-ball. Max Chapman claimed one wicket for 8 runs, and Ahmad Naqash also picked up a scalp, though his three overs proved expensive at 36 runs. Captain Alford bowled an economical single over, conceding just 2 runs.
The 101-run defeat will be a learning experience for this young Kestrels side, who showed pockets of promise with bat and ball despite being outplayed on the night. Gupta's disciplined bowling and Kapilan's willingness to play shots offered encouragement, and there were plenty of positives for the coaching staff to build upon as the league campaign continues.
