Match Report
U13 Sharks Denied Victory in Dramatic Tie at Shiplake College
Sonning U13 Sharks travelled to Shiplake College on 1 June for their BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 1) North West league fixture against Henley and came agonisingly close to chasing down a formidable target, with both sides finishing on exactly 153 for 4 from their 20 overs in a remarkable tie.
Captain Finn Reid won the toss and opted to field first, a decision that looked questionable early on as Henley openers Alex Jewell and Harry Ellison put on a commanding opening stand of 55. Ellison was particularly fluent, striking seven boundaries in a polished 33 from 26 balls before retiring not out. Jewell contributed 11 before he was caught by Reid off the bowling of Vedanth Subramanian to provide the Sharks with their first breakthrough.
Suvir Jaryal then delivered a crucial spell, bowling Joe Parr for a duck to leave Henley at 58 for 2. However, Jaxson Mackinnon and Alex Martin rebuilt with a partnership of 63 for the third wicket that shifted momentum firmly back towards the home side. Mackinnon struck four boundaries in his 23 before being trapped lbw by Reid, who followed up by bowling Martin for 16 to finish with excellent figures of 2-19 from his two overs. Alastair Taylor then provided late impetus with an unbeaten 22 off just 13 deliveries, lacing five fours as Henley posted 153 for 4. Extras proved significant in the innings, with 44 — including 31 wides — bolstering the total.
The Sharks' reply began poorly. Henry Verrier Jones was caught for 1 off Sebastian Jorgensen in the fifth over, and when Subramanian fell caught for 9, Sonning were in trouble at 22 for 2. The match appeared to be slipping away from the visitors with the required rate climbing.
Sibikumar Muthukumaran and Idris Malik then turned the innings on its head with a superb third-wicket partnership of 51. Muthukumaran was the aggressor, crashing five fours in a blistering 24 from 17 balls before being bowled by Henley skipper Jewell. Malik took over as the anchor, compiling a mature 30 from 27 deliveries, peppered with five boundaries, before retiring not out as the leading run-scorer of the Sonning innings.
Jaryal continued the momentum with a composed 19 from 29 balls, adding 58 alongside Reid for the fourth wicket — the most productive partnership of the Sharks' innings. Just as the chase looked well set, Jaryal was run out by Alex Martin with the score on 131, mirroring the exact fall of wicket score at which Henley lost their fourth. Reid, unbeaten on 16, and Elias Haidari, who blazed 12 from just seven balls including two fours, carried the fight into the closing overs.
Henley's bowling also suffered from wayward extras, conceding 42 — with 31 wides and 10 no-balls — keeping the Sharks in the contest even when wickets fell. Toby Barlow alone sent down 10 wides in his two overs, while Alex Carter conceded six no-balls. The generosity with extras from both sides — 86 in total across the match — ultimately shaped a contest that finished in the most unlikely of outcomes.
With the scores level at 153 apiece, neither side could find the decisive run, and the match was declared a tie. Reid's all-round contribution of 2-19 with the ball and an unbeaten 16 with the bat stood out, while Malik's composed 30 and the partnerships through the middle order ensured the Sharks came within a whisker of victory at a ground where Henley had started as strong favourites. Both teams shared 15 league points from a contest that will live long in the memory.
