Match Report

Kestrels Fall Short as Henley's Batting Depth Proves Decisive at Ali's Pond

Sonning U9 Kestrels suffered a difficult afternoon at Reading Blue Coat School's Ali's Pond Pitch on 25th June, going down to Henley's Under 9 Pumas in the U9 Super 8s North West league fixture. After Henley won the toss and elected to bat, the visitors posted a commanding 146 for 5 from their 20 overs before restricting the Kestrels to 91 for 14 in reply.

Henley's innings was built on contributions throughout the order, with Freddie Postlethwaite and Wilfred Oseman both striking 19 apiece. Postlethwaite was particularly aggressive, cracking four boundaries from just 10 deliveries to set the tone early. Oseman matched his tally with three fours from 11 balls lower down the order, providing a devastating late flourish. Elijah Hall and Toby Wood each added 17, with Wood finding the boundary rope three times, while James Burcham chipped in with 13 to ensure the runs flowed consistently.

The Kestrels' bowling attack found it challenging to stem the tide, with 29 extras conceding including 18 no-balls proving costly. Jonathan Turner and Heet Panchal were the most economical of the Sonning bowlers, each returning figures of 2-0-7-0, with Turner particularly impressive in not conceding a single wide or no-ball. Oscar Williams claimed the first wicket for the Kestrels, finishing with 1 for 14 from his two overs, while Lewis Towner, Anay Goswani, and William Gates also picked up a wicket each to give the hosts some reward for their efforts.

Chasing 147, the Kestrels needed a strong start but found themselves under immediate pressure from Henley's disciplined bowling attack. Harry Waite top-scored for Sonning with 11 from 14 balls, finding one boundary in a patient innings that provided the backbone of the reply. Oscar Williams and Jonathan Turner both contributed 10 runs apiece, with Williams hitting a four in his knock of 10 from 13 deliveries.

Captain Anay Patel battled hard for his 7 from 10 balls, while wicketkeeper Lewis Towner struck a boundary in making 8, but the Kestrels lost wickets at regular intervals and were never able to build the momentum required to threaten the target. The lower order struggled to get going, with Anay Goswani unable to score from his 13 deliveries and William Gates managing just a single from nine balls.

Freddie Postlethwaite was the standout performer with the ball for Henley, following up his explosive batting with outstanding figures of 3 for 11 from two overs. Toby Wood claimed 2 for 6 from his two overs, while Rory Fitzgerald, James Burcham, Theo Day, Elijah Hall, and Ahmad Syed all took a wicket each to share the spoils. The Kestrels lost 14 wickets across their innings, and despite 30 extras from the Henley attack — including 14 wides and 16 no-balls — could not capitalise sufficiently.

The 55-run defeat leaves the Kestrels with lessons to take from a match in which the batting order was unable to find partnerships of substance against a well-rounded Henley side whose all-round contributions across the squad proved the difference on the day.
