Spartans Overcome Extras-Laden Contest to Edge Past Maidenhead & Bray
Sonning U15 Spartans claimed victory at the Jubilee Ground on Wednesday evening, posting 127 for 4 from their 20 overs before restricting Maidenhead & Bray to 120 for 9 in a BYCKL Under 15 Challenge match that was heavily influenced by wayward bowling from both sides.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, the Spartans were indebted to a significant contribution from extras, which totalled 52 — including a remarkable 43 wides — from the Maidenhead & Bray attack. The hosts' bowlers struggled for consistency throughout, with Umar Shahzad conceding 11 wides in his two overs, Michael Aitchison-Anastasio leaking 10, and Vedant Bhatnagar contributing eight wides alongside two no-balls. It was a challenging evening for the home side's bowling unit, with discipline proving elusive.
The standout performer with the bat for the Spartans was captain Edward Hanson, who anchored the innings with a fluent 31 from 35 balls, striking seven fours before retiring not out. Hanson featured in an opening stand of 46 with Darshil Saxena, which laid the foundation for the innings. However, the middle order wobbled when Pujan Parikh produced a devastating spell of 2-7 from his two overs, including a maiden, removing Saxena (3), Nishal Jarugu (0) and Edward Jones (0) to leave the Spartans at 60 for 3.
The recovery was led by Surya Karangad, who provided late impetus with an aggressive unbeaten 25 from just 19 deliveries, peppered with five boundaries. His partnership with Aravindth Satheeskumar, who contributed a composed unbeaten 13, ensured the Spartans finished strongly, adding valuable runs in the closing overs and pushing the total beyond the 120 mark. Ethan Pavia also chipped in with the ball for Maidenhead & Bray, taking 1-6 from two tidy overs.
In reply, Maidenhead & Bray's chase was built around Riley Bicknell, who batted through the innings for an excellent unbeaten 32 from 46 balls, hitting five fours and a six. Bicknell anchored three significant partnerships: a second-wicket stand of 52 with Vedant Bhatnagar (16), followed by a fourth-wicket alliance of 24 with Samuel Hanlon (8). At 88 for 4, the hosts were still very much in the hunt.
The turning point arrived in the closing stages as the Spartans' bowling and fielding tightened considerably. Maidenhead & Bray lost four wickets for just five runs between 115 and 120, with three run-outs in quick succession accounting for Ethan Pavia (7), James Turnbull (1) and Michael Aitchison-Anastasio (0). The pressure created by the Spartans' sharp work in the field proved decisive as the lower order crumbled.
The Spartans shared the bowling duties across eleven bowlers, with Veer Krishna (1-8), Mikhail Jafri (1-5), Naivedya Pathak (1-9), Darshil Saxena (1-9) and Parthasarathy Palaniappan (1-6) all claiming a wicket apiece. Palaniappan's figures were particularly impressive, bowling a maiden in his two-over spell. Despite Bicknell's valiant resistance, the asking rate climbed beyond reach, and Maidenhead & Bray fell seven runs short of their target, finishing on 120 for 9 to hand the Spartans a hard-fought victory.
