Stingers Fall Short as Slough's Bhalla Blitz Proves Decisive

Sonning Stingers Soft Ball suffered defeat at home to Slough in the Berkshire Women's Softball Performance – East league on 21st August, falling 18 runs short in their pursuit of 105 as the visitors claimed three valuable league points.

Captain Melissa Pengraeve won the toss and opted to field first, but the Stingers' bowlers struggled to contain the Slough batting lineup across the 12-over contest. The visitors posted 104 for 4, with extras contributing a significant 44 runs to the total — 29 wides and 10 no-balls among them proving particularly costly for the home side.

The standout performer with the bat for Slough was Richa Bhalla, who struck a superb 22 from just 11 deliveries, striking five fours in an innings that gave the visitors real impetus. Aamna Ahmed chipped in with 14 off 13 balls, including three boundaries, while Raabia Akhter added a useful 9 that featured a six. These contributions, combined with the volume of extras, allowed Slough to build a total that ultimately proved beyond the Stingers' reach.

The Sonning bowling attack was shared among seven bowlers. Charlene Tait, Chloe Bailey and Katie Barrows each claimed a wicket apiece, with Barrows returning the most economical figures of the trio at 2-0-13-1. Bailey's two overs were undermined by 14 wides, while Sophie Eckley's single over went for 12 including three wides and four no-balls. Grace Phillips delivered the tidiest spell, conceding just 12 from her two overs without a wide or no-ball.

In reply, the Stingers could manage only 86 for 1 from their 12 overs despite contributions throughout the order. Charlene Tait top-scored with a fluent 15 off 12 balls, finding the boundary three times, while captain Pengraeve set a positive tone at the top with 13 off 11 deliveries. Sophie Eckley added 11 from 14 balls, and Chloe Bailey struck 9 off just six.

The Stingers benefited from 36 extras in their innings — including 20 in penalty runs — but it was not enough to bridge the gap. Slough spread the bowling duties across eight players, with Ameena Firyad the pick, returning tidy figures of 2-0-7-1 and claiming the only Sonning wicket to fall, that of Rachel McCabe. Aamna Ahmed was also impressive, bowling a maiden in her two overs and conceding just 10 runs.

Despite every Sonning batter reaching at least four runs, the home side lacked the explosive innings needed to overhaul the target. The 18-run deficit highlighted the damage done by the loose bowling in the first innings, where the 44 extras conceded effectively set the Stingers an even stiffer challenge than the opposition batters alone would have posed.
