Match Report

Eagles Soar to Comfortable Victory at Royal Ascot

Sonning U9 Eagles produced an impressive all-round display to defeat Royal Ascot by 32 runs in this friendly fixture at Royal Ascot Cricket Club on 7th August 2023. After restricting the hosts to 56 for 11 from their 16 overs, the Eagles chased down the target with ease, posting 88 for 5 in reply.

Royal Ascot won the toss and chose to bat first, but immediately found themselves under pressure from the Eagles' opening bowlers. Oscar Williams delivered a sensational spell with the new ball, returning figures of 5 wickets for just 5 runs from his two overs — a remarkable performance that set the tone for the entire match. His accuracy and ability to find the edge proved too much for the Royal Ascot top order.

Ridith Kandadi was equally miserly at the other end, bowling a maiden in his two-over spell and conceding just a single run. The combination of Williams' wicket-taking threat and Kandadi's relentless pressure made scoring near impossible for the home side in the early stages. Captain Ranbir Setia chipped in with a wicket of his own, while Aryaansh Rawat, Anay Patel, Elijah Patterson, and Daniel Gomez each claimed a scalp to ensure all the Eagles' bowlers contributed to the dismissal tally.

For Royal Ascot, Ayoub Khokhar top-scored with 8 from 12 balls, while captain Oliver Furness provided the only boundary of the innings with a spirited 7. Teddy Stanton found run-scoring particularly difficult, managing just 1 from 13 deliveries as the Eagles' bowlers maintained their stranglehold throughout. The hosts' total of 56 included 20 extras, highlighting how few runs came from the bat.

The Eagles' reply was a controlled affair, with contributions spread across the batting order. Williams carried his outstanding form into the second innings, striking 13 from 12 balls at the top of the order, including a crisp boundary. His confident start ensured Sonning were always ahead of the required rate.

The middle order then took command as Aryaansh Rawat and captain Ranbir Setia both compiled excellent knocks of 16 apiece. Rawat struck his runs from 14 balls with a four, while Setia was even more fluent, finding the boundary once in his 12-ball innings. Neither batsman was dismissed, and their unbeaten contributions proved the backbone of the Eagles' chase. Elijah Patterson added a useful 8 from 10 balls, and Daniel Gomez contributed 7 as the runs flowed freely.

Royal Ascot's bowlers toiled hard, with Ayoub Khokhar the pick of the attack, claiming 2 for 11 from his two overs. Siadon Chaffey, Harry Kachel, and Teddy Stanton each took a wicket, but the home side were unable to build sustained pressure as the Eagles batted with purpose and composure throughout their innings.

The comprehensive victory was a testament to the Eagles' disciplined bowling and confident batting, with Williams' five-wicket haul and the unbeaten contributions of Rawat and Setia the standout performances of a dominant team display.
