U17 Scorchers Outgunned by Goring's Explosive Batting in County Cup Exit

The U17 Scorchers' County Cup campaign came to a disappointing end at Gardiner Recreation Ground on 23 July as Goring posted a formidable 202-5 from their 20 overs before bowling Sonning out for 100 in reply, securing a comprehensive victory.

Goring captain Joe Richards won the toss and chose to bat, a decision immediately vindicated by a devastating opening partnership of 109 with Jack Walsh. Richards was the dominant force, smashing 70 from just 41 deliveries, an innings studded with 13 boundaries as he peppered the Sonning attack to all parts. Walsh played an excellent supporting role, contributing 44 from 36 balls with five fours and a six before being caught by Piyanshu Desai off the bowling of skipper Ethan Towner.

Richards eventually fell caught behind by wicketkeeper Abhiveer Rawat off Christopher Dowse with the score on 109, but the platform had already been laid. George Logan then seized the initiative with a superb 52 from 31 balls, including six fours and a six, while Jackson Galbraith added a brisk 17 from 11 deliveries. Logan and Galbraith put on 61 for the third wicket, ensuring Goring maintained their attacking tempo through the middle overs.

Mohit Karangad was the most economical of the Sonning bowlers, conceding just 25 runs from his four overs, though he went wicketless. Aashmit Ghosh claimed Logan's wicket, bowling him for 52, while Dowse and Towner picked up a wicket apiece. Two run-outs provided the Scorchers with further consolation, but conceding over ten runs per over was always going to make for a difficult chase.

Facing a required rate of more than ten an over from the outset, Rawat gave the Scorchers a glimmer of hope with an aggressive 30 from 20 balls, striking five boundaries. He and Elliot Dawes put on 28 for the second wicket to take the score to 42, but Dawes's dismissal lbw to Freddie Galbraith for 8 triggered a collapse from which Sonning never recovered.

Rawat was caught off Jackson Galbraith for 30, and wickets then fell at regular intervals. Harrison Lott showed resistance with 20 from 26 balls, anchoring the middle order and featuring in several partnerships, but he could not find a partner willing to stay with him. Captain Towner managed only 5 before being bowled by Gregor McVie, and when Lott was stumped by George Logan off Oliver Mayer for 20 with the score on 90, the contest was effectively over.

Freddie Galbraith was the pick of the Goring bowling attack, returning outstanding figures of 3-12 from 3.4 overs, including the key scalps of Kavya Panchal, Dawes, and the final wicket of Arthur Parkes. Oliver Mayer also claimed 3-19 from his three overs, while Jackson Galbraith chipped in with 2-12. The Scorchers were eventually bowled out for 100 in 18.4 overs, falling 102 runs short of their target. Ollie Terry's 12 from 12 balls offered brief late resistance, but it was too little, too late on a chastening evening for the Sonning youngsters.
