Match Report

SONNING'S hopes of clinching the Premier Division title have been aided by Ibis Mapledurham's failure to phone in their result on time.

While leaders Sonning were securing a comprehensive nine-wicket win over Yateley, second-placed Ibis were keeping the pressure on with a maximum 30 point victory over Swindon Nalgo.

But Ibis then shot themselves in the foot by failing to ring the result in before 9pm - a stringent league rule which has been upheld since Wargrave made the same crucial mistake back in 1996.

On that occasion, Wargrave celebrated clinching the top flight title on the final day of the season - only to phone the result in at 9.30pm which handed the championship to Frimley.

But Ibis skipper Zulfqar Ali was not impressed and said: "A couple of the Swindon players were late arriving and the umpires decided to wait for them so we didn't start until 2.20pm.

"And although we bowled them out cheaply, they held on until the second from last over so it was getting late when we finished and it takes time to get everything signed and put together.

"There wasn't much more I could do to speed things up and to me it feels like we are getting penalised for nothing."

Berkshire League results secretary Andrea Treherne said: "Clubs are always entitled to an appeal but unless they come up with a very good excuse they will be deducted the five points."

Sonning are now 24 points clear at the top and their average is almost two points better with just two fixtures remaining.

And if they can beat defending champions Cavaliers this weekend then the league crown will almost certainly be theirs.

However, skipper Gary Phillips is taking nothing for granted and said: "Asif Syed is an exceptional player for them and we will have to be very careful with him because he has the ability to take anyone apart - I just hope it's not us."

Cavaliers fixture secretary Stanley John said: "We've got Sonning and Ibis left to play and we'll be doing our best to cause an upset against them both."

If Sonning show the same form as they did against Yateley then there shouldn't be any problems.

Although Yateley started well and reached 90-1 inside 20 overs, once Tom Lawrence had gone for 61 the other batsmen soon started to follow and a final total of 181-9 was never going to be enough.

Latif Gohar was given a rare opportunity with the ball and the off spinner ripped out the first six wickets to finish with 6-41.

In Sonning's reply, Oranzaid Nazir smashed a quickfire 65, Duncan Parr finished unbeaten on 34 while the prolific Mark Richards came in at three and rattled up 67 not out in just 10 overs to complete a stunning nine-wicket success on 182-1.

Afterwards Phillips said: "At one stage it was looking like they would get at least 250 so we were very pleased to reduce them to 181. "Although they struggled to get Abbas away they took a liking to Phil Swann and Anwar so Latif had a rare opportunity with the ball and took their first six wickets."
