Match Report

Sonning Fall Short Despite Smith's Superb 73 in High-Scoring Affair

Sonning Women's 1st XI were unable to chase down a formidable total of 203 as Sulhamstead & Ufton claimed victory in their Division 3 A encounter at The Watson Oval on 3rd August 2025. Captain Grace Phillips won the toss and opted to field first, but the hosts' batting firepower proved too much to overhaul despite a valiant reply from the visitors.

Sulhamstead & Ufton's innings was built around a magnificent partnership between captain Megan Forth and Emma MacEwen. After Lolly Macdonald fell for a duck in just the second over — caught by wicketkeeper Sarah Wonham off the bowling of Michaela Herrett — Forth steadied the ship alongside Laura Hawkins. The pair added 36 for the second wicket before Hawkins was bowled by Belle Myers for 10 off 35 balls.

What followed was a devastating third-wicket stand of 140 runs that transformed the contest. Forth anchored proceedings with composure, while MacEwen unleashed an extraordinary assault, smashing 79 from just 42 deliveries, including eleven fours and two sixes. Forth herself was equally impressive, finishing unbeaten on 88 from 69 balls with thirteen boundaries. Myers eventually broke the partnership when MacEwen was caught by Chloe Bailey, but with the score already at 177, the damage was well and truly done. Catherine Guppy saw out the remaining overs as Sulhamstead & Ufton posted 203 for 3.

Belle Myers was the pick of the Sonning attack, returning figures of 2 for 25 from her five overs, including a maiden. Geethika Jyothis was also economical, conceding just 19 runs from five overs with two maidens, though without reward. The remaining bowlers found conditions tougher against the aggressive home batters, with Grace Phillips going for 43 from four overs and Chloe Bailey conceding 29 from two.

In reply, Sonning made a positive start through the opening pair of Sophie Smith and Sophie Parker, who put on 48 for the first wicket. Parker struck three fours in her 16 before being bowled by Lolly Macdonald, but Smith continued to bat with real authority and found an excellent partner in Geethika Jyothis. The pair constructed a second-wicket stand worth 97 runs that kept Sonning firmly in the hunt.

Smith was outstanding, cracking nine fours in her 73 from 63 balls, demonstrating both timing and intent against a varied Sulhamstead & Ufton attack that used nine different bowlers. Laura Hawkins eventually had her caught by Catherine Guppy, and in the same over dismissed Chloe Bailey for a golden duck to leave Sonning at 145 for 3. With the required rate climbing steeply, the loss of their set batter proved decisive.

Jyothis remained unbeaten on 42 from 46 balls, finding the boundary five times, and Elinor Longridge held firm on 3 not out, but the asking rate had spiralled beyond reach. Sonning finished on 171 for 3 from their 25 overs — a creditable total boosted by 37 extras, but ultimately 32 runs shy of the target. Despite the defeat, the side collected five bonus points, with four for batting reflecting the strength of their reply.
