Sonning 4th XI Fall Short Despite Superb Opening Stand at Yateley Manor

Sonning 4th XI suffered a 49-run defeat at home to Crowthorne & Crown Wood in Division 9C of the Thames Valley Cricket League, their promising chase undone by a middle-order collapse after a magnificent century opening partnership.

Crowthorne skipper Jake Gibbings won the toss and elected to bat at Yateley Manor School, a decision vindicated by opener Daniel Manning's commanding 67 from 88 balls. Manning anchored the innings with seven fours, putting on 57 for the first wicket with Ateeq Mirza (26) before captain Arun Raghavendra broke through to bowl Mirza. The real damage was done in the second-wicket stand of 96 between Manning and Andrew Amor, who struck a fluent 37 from 46 deliveries. The pair took the score to 153 before Siddharth Kumar dismissed Amor and then Nathan Elliot for a golden duck in successive deliveries, sparking a mini-collapse that saw three wickets fall on the same total.

Manning finally departed for his well-made 67, caught by Hugo Popplewell off Neel Kumar, but Crowthorne's middle order ensured the momentum was not lost. Gibbings blazed 20 from just nine balls with four boundaries, while Will Taylor (18) and Noah Darby (16) kept the scoreboard ticking. Geethika Jyothis was the pick of the Sonning bowlers, returning excellent figures of 3-21 from eight overs, including a maiden, and claimed the key wickets of Taylor, Darby and Aran Long. Neel Kumar chipped in with 2-34 and Siddharth Kumar took 2-53, but 33 extras — including 16 byes — proved costly as Crowthorne posted a formidable 231 for eight.

Sonning's reply got off to a dream start through Gaurav Jayan and Dhiren Panchal, who put together a stunning opening partnership of 120. Jayan was the more prolific of the two, striking nine fours in his 61 from 86 balls, while Panchal matched him with an authoritative 54 from 75 deliveries, including six fours and a six. The pair gave Sonning every reason to believe the target was within reach.

The complexion of the innings changed dramatically when Jayan fell at 120, caught by Gibbings off Nathan Elliot. In the same over, Popplewell was dismissed for a first-ball duck, caught by Adam Malone, and suddenly Sonning were 120 for two with the required rate climbing. Panchal's departure at 133, bowled by Mike Storey, triggered a catastrophic slide.

From the comfort of 120 without loss, Sonning lurched to 159 for seven as Mike Storey and William Amor tore through the batting order. Storey was outstanding, taking 3-21 from his eight overs to remove Panchal, Harrison Lott (13) and William Travers (7), while Amor accounted for skipper Raghavendra for a duck and had Neel Kumar stumped by Taylor. The middle order managed just 24 runs between five batsmen as Sonning's chase disintegrated.

Siddharth Kumar offered some late resistance with an unbeaten 20 from 23 balls, sharing an unbroken eighth-wicket stand with Geethika Jyothis (2 not out) that saw Sonning through to their full 40 overs. However, at 182 for seven, the target remained well out of reach. Despite collecting eight bonus points in defeat — four for batting and four for bowling — Raghavendra's side will rue a collapse that saw them lose seven wickets for just 62 runs after being so perfectly placed.
