Match Report

Sonning Suffer Heavy Defeat as Wokingham's Mushafa and Keast Dominate at King George's Field

Sonning captain Peter Higginbottom won the toss and opted to bowl first in this Division 1B league fixture at King George's Field, but his side were ultimately undone by a commanding Wokingham batting display that posted 291 all out before bowling Sonning out for just 135 in reply.

Wokingham's openers set the tone with a brisk 57-run opening stand. Charlie Carter struck three fours in an aggressive 25 from 23 balls before being stumped by wicketkeeper Dhruv Peshkar off Mohammed Zahid. Michael Cowdell was more measured in compiling 36 from 61 deliveries, hitting six fours before falling caught by Muhammad Ayub off Damario Goodman. The hosts appeared to be making inroads when Jayden Barson departed for 26, bowled by Goodman, and Harry Warwick followed for a duck, leaving Wokingham at 102 for four.

What followed was the decisive passage of the match. Mushtafa Mushafa and Mack Keast combined for a devastating fifth-wicket partnership of 113 runs that wrestled the initiative firmly away from Sonning. Keast played with authority, crashing seven fours and two sixes in a fluent 63 from 67 balls before being bowled by Goodman. Mushafa, however, was the standout performer of the afternoon, anchoring the innings superbly. He continued to find willing partners after Keast's dismissal, adding 31 with Jacob Clark and a further 26 with skipper Jarrett Bobb, before finally falling caught by Danyal Ghazi off Zahid for a magnificent 91 from 76 balls, an innings laced with eleven fours and three sixes.

Goodman and Zahid shared all ten wickets between them in a remarkable display. Goodman was outstanding, returning figures of 5-27 from his ten overs with four maidens, accounting for Cowdell, Barson, Warwick, Keast, and Clapham. Zahid complemented him with 5-46 from 9.4 overs, his victims including Carter, Mushafa, Clark, Bobb, and Longridge. The remaining five Sonning bowlers went wicketless, with Ghazi's ten overs proving particularly expensive at 97 runs, including six wides and four no-balls.

Chasing 292, Sonning's reply began positively as Peshkar struck two early boundaries in making 10 from eight balls before being bowled by Anthony Clapham. Ayub looked the most fluent of the top order, hitting five fours in his 27 from 30 balls, but once he fell caught by Jacob Clark off Paul Dewick with the score on 45, wickets tumbled in alarming fashion. Zahid managed only 5, Amaad Ali made 9, and Higginbottom was trapped lbw by Clark for just 1 as Sonning slumped to 57 for five.

Indeveer Sahota offered brief resistance, battling through 71 balls for his 24, but struggled to find partners at the other end. Rahul Sood fell for 5, caught by Bobb off Dewick, and Goodman, so effective with the ball, contributed a useful 15 with the bat before being bowled by Daniel Longridge. The most productive stand of the innings came eighth-wicket, where Sahota and Ghazi put on 47 together, but once Sahota was caught behind by Keast off Clark, the end came swiftly. Ghazi remained unbeaten on 30 from 31 balls, the top score of the innings, hitting four fours in a defiant knock that ultimately counted for little.

Clark was the pick of the Wokingham attack, claiming 4-44 from his full allocation of ten overs, including the key scalps of Zahid, Higginbottom, Sahota, and Saranjeet Singh. Dewick was miserly with 2-15 from seven overs, while Longridge chipped in with 2-16 from seven. Sonning were bowled out for 135 in just 35.4 overs, handing Wokingham a comprehensive victory by 156 runs. Despite picking up seven bowling bonus points, Sonning will be left to reflect on a day where their bowlers, bar Goodman and Zahid, were far too generous, and a top order collapse in the chase left them with too much ground to make up.
