Match Report
Scorchers Post 93 to Secure Victory Over Cholsey at King George's Field
Sonning U13 Scorchers claimed a convincing win over Cholsey in their U13 League Pool 6 fixture at King George's Field on 5th May, defending a total of 93 for 6 with a disciplined bowling display that restricted the visitors to 78 for 2 from their 15 overs.
Captain Jamie Dollinger won the toss and elected to bat, but the Scorchers' innings got off to the worst possible start when Henry Verrier Jones was bowled by Lucas Ainsworth for a duck off just the first ball he faced, leaving the hosts at 0 for 1. That early setback brought Dollinger to the crease to join Saurav Sivaram, and the pair steadied the ship with a partnership of 24 before Dollinger was bowled by Lennon Pike for 15, an innings that included two boundaries from 18 deliveries.
Sivaram proved the anchor of the Scorchers' innings, playing with real maturity throughout. He combined fluent strokeplay with sound judgement, hitting one four and clearing the boundary once in a composed knock of 29 from 25 balls before retiring not out. His most productive stand came alongside Tejus Maddi, the pair adding 45 runs for the third wicket to transform the scoreboard from 24 for 2 to 69 for 3. Maddi was the more aggressive of the two during their partnership, striking three fours in a rapid 20 from just 14 balls before Pike claimed his second wicket of the afternoon.
The middle and lower order struggled to maintain that momentum. Oliver Barker contributed 6 before being caught off Devon Hansen, Charlie Bright was run out by Olivia Preece for 2, and Daniel Moseley managed only 1 from 11 balls before being bowled by John Santer. Frederick Parkes added a brisk unbeaten 3 from 3 balls to help the Scorchers finish on 93 for 6. For Cholsey, Pike's figures of 2 for 11 from two overs were the standout, while Hansen bowled tidily with 1 for 3 from two overs, including a maiden.
Cholsey's reply never truly gathered the pace required. Namit Desai set the tone with the new ball, bowling an excellent opening spell of 2-1-4-1, including a maiden, and crucially removing John Santer bowled for 7 with the score on 11. Devon Hansen batted solidly at the top of the order for 8 from 25 balls before retiring not out, while Lennon Pike showed similar resilience with 8 from 25 deliveries before also retiring.
Captain Ellis Preece and Toby Russell put together the most significant partnership of the Cholsey innings, adding 40 for the second wicket. Russell struck one four in his 7 from 10 balls before Daniel Moseley bowled him with the score on 51, breaking a stand that had threatened to bring the visitors back into the contest. Preece remained unbeaten on 10, and Lucas Ainsworth contributed a handy 9 not out, but the required run rate climbed steadily beyond reach.
The Scorchers' bowling effort was a genuine team affair, with all ten outfield players used. Frederick Parkes was tidy with 0 for 7 from two overs, while Tejus Maddi and Saurav Sivaram each conceded just 2 runs from their single overs. Extras proved a factor throughout the match — 17 in the Sonning innings and 29 in the Cholsey reply — but ultimately the Scorchers' superior batting, anchored by Sivaram's unbeaten 29 and the crucial Sivaram-Maddi partnership, proved the difference as Cholsey finished 15 runs short.
