Sonning Fall Short as Hayes Last-Wicket Pair Deny Them Victory at The Green

Sonning 1st XI travelled to The Green in Hayes for this Division 1B encounter knowing that runs on the board would be essential on what proved to be a testing surface. Captain Peter Higginbottom won the toss and elected to bat, but his side were immediately under pressure as Hayes skipper Prashant Kumar struck three early blows to leave Sonning reeling at 16 for 2.

Kumar removed both openers Alex Mcloughlin (11 off 30 balls) and Dhruv Peshkar (4) before trapping Mohammed Zahid lbw for 4 off just three deliveries. At 16 for 2, Sonning needed a partnership, and Muhammad Ayub and Amaad Ali delivered one. The pair put on 28 for the fourth wicket, with Ayub striking three fours and a six in his 24 off 38 balls before he was caught by Aarez Asim off the bowling of Suraj Singh.

Ali continued to counter-attack impressively, hitting seven fours and a six in a fluent 37 off 39 deliveries that was the innings' top score. However, once he fell — caught by Kunal Roy off Harman Momi at 89 for 7 — the middle and lower order offered little resistance. Suraj Singh was devastating in his second spell, finishing with remarkable figures of 6 for 31 from eight overs, including three maidens, as wickets tumbled in clusters. Sid Anilkumar, David Coutts and Shenul Widanapathirana all fell for ducks in quick succession. A late cameo from Danyal Ghazi (11 not out) and Damario Goodman (8 off 5 balls) added some respectability, but Sonning were bowled out for 112 in 28 overs.

Defending a modest total, Sonning's bowlers responded superbly. Goodman struck with the third ball of the reply, having Kunal Roy caught by Zahid for a duck, and followed up immediately by bowling Kiran Bhardwaj first ball to reduce Hayes to 1 for 2. The home side were rocking, and despite a steadying partnership of 27 between Ruhaan Mughal (13 off 60 balls) and Tarsh Singh Mann (15), Zahid and Goodman continued to make inroads.

Zahid was outstanding with the ball, claiming 4 for 39 from his 15 overs with five maidens, including the key scalps of Mughal, Singh Mann, Jugjeet Singh — stumped by Peshkar — and Suraj Singh. Goodman was equally impressive, completing a five-wicket haul when he had Prashant Kumar caught by Mcloughlin, finishing with 5 for 28 from 15 overs. At 70 for 9, Sonning appeared to have the match firmly in their grasp.

However, Hayes number nine Sachin Kumar had other ideas. Arriving at the crease with his side in desperate trouble, Kumar batted with composure and skill, striking six fours in an unbeaten 37 off 61 balls. Crucially, he found a willing partner in last man Aarez Asim, who showed tremendous resolve in an unbroken tenth-wicket stand. Asim contributed 11 from 43 balls, occupying the crease with admirable patience as the pair added 46 runs together to guide Hayes to their target of 113.

It was a bitterly frustrating afternoon for Sonning, whose bowlers had done everything asked of them only to be denied by a remarkable last-wicket partnership. Despite collecting eight bowling bonus points, the 1st XI left The Green with just three game points, while the outstanding individual performances of Goodman and Zahid with the ball ultimately went unrewarded.
