Scorchers Fight Back From Early Trouble to Claim Victory at Knowl Hill

Sonning U11 Scorchers produced a superb all-round display at Knowl Hill on 27 May, recovering from a precarious position in their run chase to overhaul Aston Rowant's total of 94 with nearly five overs to spare in this U11 League Pool 3 fixture.

Having won the toss and elected to field, captain Ranbir Setia's decision was vindicated by a devastating opening spell from his bowling attack. Vivaan Ramesh set the tone immediately, bowling Zac Holmans without scoring with just the first ball of the innings. Zain Baloch maintained the pressure from the other end, removing Jake Smith for 1, while Svarup Huggi was simply outstanding with figures of 3-3 from his two overs, including a maiden, as he accounted for Thomas Reeves, Theo Letellier — caught smartly by Setia — and Rouvin Madhani. At 6 for 4, Aston Rowant were in deep trouble.

James Kershaw and Seb Holmans then provided the backbone of the visitors' innings with a crucial fifth-wicket partnership of 51. Holmans was the more aggressive of the pair, striking three fours in a brisk 21 from 15 balls before Setia broke through to bowl him. Kershaw batted with admirable composure throughout, carrying his bat for an unbeaten 19 from 34 deliveries. Jonathan Turner chipped in with a wicket, bowling Thomas Reeves for a duck, while Oliver Baker completed a sharp run out of Finn Isaac to finish the innings. A total of 46 extras, including 38 wides, inflated Aston Rowant's score significantly beyond what their batsmen managed from the blade.

The Scorchers' reply began disastrously. Ranbir Setia fell for 2, caught by James Kershaw off Rouvin Madhani, and Harry Waite was bowled by Madhani for a golden duck in the same over, leaving Sonning reeling at 3 for 2. When Zac Holmans had Jonathan Turner caught by Madhani for 9, and then bowled Zain Baloch for 8, the hosts had slumped to 28 for 4 and the chase looked in serious jeopardy.

Enter Vivaan Ramesh, who followed up his excellent bowling performance with a match-defining innings. Ramesh put together a composed 21-run partnership with Lewis Towner for the fifth wicket, steadying the ship after the top-order collapse. Towner contributed a valuable 10 from 11 balls, including a well-struck four, before being bowled by Thomas Reeves to make it 49 for 5.

Ramesh then found an ideal partner in Oliver Baker, and the pair transformed the match. Their sixth-wicket stand of 42 runs took the Scorchers to within touching distance of victory. Ramesh was particularly impressive, accumulating 24 from 25 balls with two fours before retiring not out. Baker matched him stroke for stroke, cracking three boundaries in an unbeaten 19 from 20 deliveries. Though Savraj Sall fell cheaply, caught off Jimmy Trueman, the damage was already done.

Baker struck the winning runs in the 16th over, with Jovan Purwaha at the other end, as the Scorchers reached 97 for 6 to complete a fine victory. Vivaan Ramesh's outstanding double of 2-1 with the ball and 24 not out with the bat earned him the standout performance of the day, while Svarup Huggi's three-wicket haul ensured the Scorchers were always in the contest despite the mid-innings wobble with the bat.
