Sonning 2nd XI Fall Short as Saksham Singh's Stunning Century Powers Braywood Chase

Sonning 2nd XI posted a competitive 255-9 from their 52 overs at King George's Field but were left to rue a devastating innings from Braywood's Saksham Singh, whose magnificent 129 off just 96 balls guided the visitors to a three-wicket victory in this Division 4B encounter.

Captain Dan Anderson won the toss and elected to bat, with Duncan Parr and Jacob Fitton opening the innings. The pair put on a solid 57-run partnership before Parr fell lbw to Ali A Haider for 32, a knock built on six well-struck boundaries from 61 deliveries. Haider struck again immediately, trapping Raoul Harding lbw for a duck to leave Sonning wobbling at 57-2.

What followed was the defining partnership of the Sonning innings. Fitton and Robert Jones combined superbly, adding 117 for the third wicket to wrestle back the initiative. Fitton batted with admirable patience, compiling 65 from 125 balls with six fours and a six before he was caught by Uzairuddin Mohammed off Tapan Kumar. Jones was the more aggressive of the pair, striking nine boundaries in an excellent 83 from 77 deliveries. His dismissal, caught by Muhammad Salman off skipper Ajay Carvalo, came at 223-5 and triggered a mini-collapse as Sonning lost four wickets for 32 runs in the closing overs. Max Murphy's unbeaten 12 off six balls and Anderson's brisk 21 from 19 balls helped push the total beyond 250, though three run-outs in the latter stages suggested some confusion between the wickets.

Braywood's reply began shakily when Jack Durrant had Mohsin Bukhari caught behind by Sophie Smith for 8 with the score on just 10. What followed, however, was a masterclass from Saksham Singh. The wicketkeeper-batsman launched a breathtaking assault on the Sonning attack, smashing 13 fours and nine sixes in a devastating display of power hitting. He shared a monumental 200-run stand for the second wicket with Ali A Haider, who contributed a composed 54 from 82 balls to provide the perfect foil for Singh's aggression.

Sonning's bowlers toiled manfully but found Singh in imperious form. Seven bowlers were used in search of a breakthrough, but it was not until the score had reached 210 that Jameel Ahamed finally bowled Singh for 129. Ahamed was the pick of the Sonning attack, finishing with figures of 3-60 from his 10.3 overs, and he followed up Singh's dismissal by removing Uzairuddin Mohammed and Tapan Kumar as Braywood stumbled from 210-2 to 249-7.

A late flurry of wickets offered Sonning a glimmer of hope. Jacob Fitton chipped in with two wickets in his two overs, removing Zeeshan Chaudhry for 18 and Muhammad Salman for a duck in quick succession. At 247-6, the game appeared to be swinging back in the home side's favour, but Danish Ali and Hussain Imran Hayder steadied the ship with an unbroken eighth-wicket partnership to see Braywood home.

Sophie Smith deserved particular mention behind the stumps, taking two catches to dismiss Bukhari and Haider, while Ahamed's three wickets gave him a fine all-round contribution to add to his brief cameo with the bat. Ultimately, though, it was Singh's extraordinary innings that proved the difference, his century taking the game away from Sonning in emphatic fashion as Braywood chased down the target with 7.3 overs to spare.
