Match Report

Sonning replaced Purley at the top of the Premier Division following their eight-wicket hammering of Berkshire County Sports.

They took full advantage of Purley's defeat to Sandhurst to go two points clear of their main title rivals.

Despite a firm wicket and fast outfield which helped the batting side, Berkshire County Sports were shot out for a round 100 in less than 36 overs after a devastating spell of bowling.

Spearheading the visiting attack was left-arm seamer Ghulam Abbas who took 3-33 from 13.5 overs, including the wicket of South African dan-german Anton Nel, clean bowled for a top score of 20.

Abbas was superbly backed up by the Sonning trio of George Troughton (2-12), Latif Gohar (2-19) and Harvey Grout (2-25), while key batsman Suki Kang was the victim of a sharp run-out for 19.

County Sports then failed to get the early breakthrough they needed with the ball as an 87 run stand between Mark Richards and Nazeem Hussain set the platform for victory.

Richards hammered a half-century in no time before he went for 53, with Hussain adding a valuable 33.

Richards was particularly harsh on Andy Watts who went for 32 runs in just two overs.

It was then left for Gohar (5no) and Tom Allen (4no) to see Sonning to victory on 101-2 which came off only 64 balls.

A delighted Sonning skipper Gary Phillips said: "It's nice to return to the top after a very good performance. "Abbas bowled brilliantly and Mark Richards couldn't have faced 30 balls in his knock. But we've seen him hit a half-century in three overs before so we weren't that surprised."

Sports' Peter Drain admitted: "It was one of those games you just put down to experience and hope to do better the next time you play."
