U17 Scorchers Cruise to Comprehensive Victory at Knowl Hill

The U17 Scorchers produced a clinical all-round display to defeat Hurst Rangers CC at Knowl Hill on 5th August, chasing down a modest target of 68 with nine wickets in hand and plenty of overs to spare.

Hurst Rangers won the toss and elected to bat, but their decision quickly backfired as captain Jack Wolfenden struck twice in his opening spell. Wolfenden removed Salar Hashmi, bowled for 5 off just three balls after a brief but aggressive cameo that included a boundary, and had Charlie Corp caught by Aashmit Ghosh for 3. At 14-2, the visitors were already under pressure.

Max Murphy continued the onslaught from the other end, bowling a maiden in his two-over spell and claiming two wickets of his own. Tommy Odey was caught by Elliot Dawes for a duck, and Rahul Tiku followed immediately, caught by Shenul Widanapathirana without scoring, leaving Hurst Rangers reeling at 15-4. Murphy's figures of 2-5 from two overs, despite conceding five no-balls, were outstanding.

Ethan Towner proved equally difficult to face, also returning figures of 2-5 from two overs with a maiden. He had Daniel Savage caught by Widanapathirana after a scoreless 10-ball stay, and then held a return catch to dismiss Elliot Brown for a first-ball duck. At 19-6, Hurst Rangers were in dire straits.

Oliver Kinlock provided the only real resistance for the visitors, counter-attacking with an entertaining 22 from 21 balls that featured four fours and a six. He and Bryan Cherian put together a partnership of 38 for the seventh wicket — comfortably the highest stand of the innings — to drag the total from 19-6 to 57-7. Aashmit Ghosh eventually broke the stand, bowling Kinlock to end the threat.

Elliot Dawes then wrapped up the tail efficiently, bowling Cherian for 6 and Susanna Lawrence for a duck in his 1.1 overs to finish with 2-2. Harrison Lott completed a smart run out of Avanish Ganjare, and although Aiden Pyle struck a six in a brief unbeaten 6 off two balls, Hurst Rangers were bowled out for 67 in 14.1 overs, with extras contributing a hefty 25 runs to the total.

The chase was never in doubt. Harrison Lott set the tone with 11 from 13 balls, including two fours, before being caught by Oliver Kinlock off Salar Hashmi at 16-1. From there, Widanapathirana took control with a blistering 23 from just 14 deliveries, lacing five boundaries through the field before retiring not out. Sid Anilkumar contributed a composed 9 from 14 balls with two fours before also retiring, and unbeaten contributions from Ethan Towner (3) and Piyanshu Desai (6) saw the Scorchers home to 71-1 in just 8.3 overs. The opposition's bowling was hampered by indiscipline, with Rahul Tiku conceding 39 runs from three overs including six wides and two no-balls, while Charlie Corp sent down six wides in a single over.

The victory was built on an outstanding bowling performance in which eight Sonning bowlers shared the workload, with Wolfenden, Murphy, Towner, and Dawes each claiming two wickets apiece. Widanapathirana's fielding contributions — two catches — and his explosive batting made him the standout performer of the match.
