Match Report
Kestrels Soar to Victory at Gallowstree Common Behind Turner's Four-Wicket Masterclass
Sonning U9 Kestrels delivered a commanding all-round performance to defeat Kidmore End in the BYCL Under 9 Super 8s South West league at Gallowstree Common on 30th June 2024. Having won the toss and elected to bat, the Kestrels posted an imposing 153 for 6 from their 20 overs before bowling out the hosts for 101, securing a comprehensive 52-run victory.
Captain Alexander Green led from the front with the bat, top-scoring with an impressive 16 off 14 balls, striking three fours in a fluent innings that set the tone for the Kestrels' total. Havishreddy Basireddy contributed a brisk 11 from 11 deliveries, finding the boundary twice, while Arthur Teed matched that score with 11 off just 10 balls, also hitting two fours. Jonathan Turner and Ridith Kandadi provided solid starts at the top with 9 runs apiece, and Harrison Kidd chipped in with a useful 7 at the end of the innings.
The Kestrels were assisted by a generous helping of extras, with 74 runs coming in sundries — 24 wides, 24 no-balls and 23 byes reflecting the challenges Kidmore End's bowlers faced with their accuracy. Jaiden Andrews was the standout bowler for the hosts, delivering a remarkable spell of 2-0-0-1 that included two maiden overs, while Siddarth Goteti and Avi Karn both bowled tidily, conceding just five runs each from their two-over spells.
In reply, Kidmore End's chase never truly gained momentum against a disciplined Kestrels bowling attack. Jonathan Turner produced a devastating spell with the ball, claiming four wickets for just four runs from his two overs — a performance that effectively broke the backbone of the home side's batting. His accuracy and movement proved too much for the opposition batters to handle, and his contribution was arguably the match-defining moment.
Siddarth Goteti offered the most resistance for Kidmore End, hitting 14 off 12 balls with two fours, while Avi Karn scored a quickfire 12 from eight deliveries. Arlo Campion added 9, and Jonah Wells battled through 25 balls for his 8 runs, but wickets fell at regular intervals, preventing any sustained partnerships from developing.
The wickets were shared around the Kestrels attack, highlighting the strength in depth of their bowling unit. Alexander Green supported Turner superbly with figures of 1 for 3 from two overs, while Oliver Baker was equally miserly, taking 1 for 2. Jacob Garner picked up two wickets from his spell, and Arthur Teed, Muhammad Ansari, and Henry Seadon each claimed a scalp to ensure all ten Kestrels bowlers contributed to the victory.
Kidmore End's total of 101 included 54 extras, with 28 wides and 14 byes making up the bulk, but their batters managed only 47 runs from the bat — a telling statistic that underlined the effectiveness of the Kestrels' bowling and fielding. The 15 wickets taken demonstrated the relentless pressure applied throughout the innings, with the hosts losing dismissals in almost every partnership.
This was a thoroughly professional away performance from the Kestrels, with contributions across the squad. Green's captaincy, Turner's match-winning bowling figures of 4 for 4, and a collective batting effort that saw seven players reach double figures or thereabouts all combined to deliver a deserved victory in the South West division.
