Spartans Fall Short as Maidenhead & Bray Claim Victory at Reading Blue Coat School

Sonning U11 Spartans suffered a 29-run defeat at home to Maidenhead & Bray in their BYCL Under 11 Challenge (Tier 1) Central league fixture, with the visitors chasing down a target of 128 with relative comfort at Reading Blue Coat School on 12 July.

Maidenhead & Bray won the toss and inserted the Spartans, who set about building a competitive total in the pairs format. Jaiden Patel was the standout performer with the bat, striking an impressive 16 from just 12 balls, including four boundaries, to top-score for Sonning. His fluent innings provided the backbone of the Spartans' effort and demonstrated excellent shot selection against a varied bowling attack.

Kirrthhana Yennaboina contributed a useful 15 from 14 deliveries, finding the boundary twice, while Rian Gehlot added 11 from 14 balls with two fours of his own. Harry Waite chipped in with 10 from 13, and both Isabella Partridge and Oliver Baker scored 8 apiece. Extras proved significant, with 43 added to the total — 25 of which came from wides — as the Spartans posted 127 from their 20 overs, losing all 10 wickets in the process.

For the visitors' bowling attack, Adam Ishtiaq was the most effective, claiming 2-5 from his two overs in an economical spell. Beatrix Grosvenor picked up two wickets as well, though at a costlier rate of 2-26 from three overs. Reuben Grosvenor and Jovan Powar each took a wicket, with Grosvenor proving particularly difficult to score off, conceding just 9 runs from his three overs.

In reply, Maidenhead & Bray's batting was well spread across the order, with no fewer than eight batters reaching at least six runs. Beatrix Grosvenor led the way with 15 from 14 balls, including two fours, while Adam Ishtiaq hit 12 from 11 deliveries with a pair of boundaries. Reuben Grosvenor (11) and captain Leo Glenn-Jackson (11) both made telling contributions in the middle order, and with only six wickets falling across the innings, the visitors reached 156 with runs to spare.

Kirrthhana Yennaboina was the pick of the Sonning bowlers, returning impressive figures of 2-14 from her two overs. Captain Bhuvik Rao Mane Prakashrao Santhoshrao and Rian Gehlot each claimed a wicket, but the Spartans struggled to apply sustained pressure, with several bowlers proving expensive. Jaiden Patel conceded 23 from two overs, while Oliver Baker went for 21 in his two-over spell. Extras again played a major role, with 41 added to the Maidenhead & Bray total, including 14 no-balls and 19 wides.

Harry Waite and Isabella Partridge offered the most economical spells for Sonning, conceding just 6 and 9 runs respectively from their two overs each, but without taking wickets they were unable to stem the flow of runs from the other end. The Spartans will need to tighten up their bowling discipline if they are to turn results around in this competitive Tier 1 competition.
