Match Report

Falcons Fall Short as Kestrels Soar to Victory in U9 Intra-Club Derby

The U9 Falcons suffered a 32-run defeat at the hands of the U9 Kestrels in a friendly pairs match at King George's Field on 11th August 2024. Despite winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Falcons could only muster 74 runs from their 16 overs before the Kestrels chased down the target with relative comfort, finishing on 106.

Captain Ishaan Acharya's decision to bat first appeared sound in principle, but the Falcons' top order struggled to find any rhythm. Opener Henry Haleeem managed six runs from eight balls before being dismissed, while Acharya himself could only accumulate three from 15 deliveries. The middle order offered little respite, with Inara Ahmed, Younus Ahmed, Eshaal Ahmed and Araiz Younis contributing just three runs between them from 48 balls faced — a period of sustained pressure from the Kestrels' bowling attack.

The innings was rescued somewhat by a magnificent effort from Jovan Purwaha, who top-scored with 19 runs from just 14 balls, striking three boundaries in an aggressive display that provided the Falcons with much-needed impetus. Reyanshvarman Vallabhaneni offered useful support with five runs from ten balls, but with 42 extras making up more than half the total, the Falcons' batting scorecard made for difficult reading.

For the Kestrels with the ball, Suraj Iyer was outstanding, returning figures of 2-0-2-0 including a maiden over — a remarkable achievement at U9 level. Shreyas Avirneni, Niko Jordinson and Leo Draper each claimed a wicket apiece, though the Kestrels' bowlers were guilty of conceding 32 wides across their 16 overs.

The Kestrels' reply was built on contributions throughout the order. Leo Draper led the way at the top with 13 runs from 16 balls, including the only boundary of the innings, while Reeva Desai was equally impressive with 12 from 13 deliveries at number three. Shreyas Avirneni added a valuable ten runs from the lower order, and Suraj Iyer struck a rapid eight from eight balls to cap a fine all-round display.

The Falcons' bowling struggled to contain the Kestrels' batting, with extras once again proving costly — 54 in total, including 22 no-balls and 21 wides. Eshaal Ahmed's three overs were particularly expensive, conceding 25 runs with 14 no-balls. Inara Ahmed and Younus Ahmed claimed the only wickets for the Falcons, taking one apiece, while Jovan Purwaha was the most economical of the Falcons' bowlers, conceding just six runs from his two overs.

The scale of the defeat highlighted the gap between the two sides on the day, with the Kestrels' superior discipline in both batting and bowling proving the difference. For the Falcons, Purwaha's batting performance stood out as a clear positive, but the side will need greater contributions from across the order if they are to compete in future fixtures.
