Sonning 5th XI Undone by Matt Beeby's Blistering Century in Friendly Defeat at Gerrards Cross

Sonning 5th XI travelled to Summerleaze Sports Bar on Saturday for a T20 friendly against Gerrards Cross but were left chasing shadows after Matt Beeby smashed an unbeaten 125 off just 74 balls to power the hosts to an imposing 196 for 1 from their 20 overs. Despite a defiant unbeaten 47 from Kanishka Suriarachchi, Sonning could only manage 119 for 6 in reply, falling 77 runs short.

Gerrards Cross captain Dominic Hampshire won the toss and chose to bat, a decision that proved inspired as opener Matt Beeby launched an extraordinary assault on the Sonning bowling attack. Beeby was destructive from the outset, clearing the boundary five times and finding the rope on thirteen occasions during an innings that left every Sonning bowler bruised. He shared a dominant opening stand of 116 with Edward Beeby, who contributed a steady 31 from 35 balls before being run out thanks to sharp fielding from Moksha Suriarachchi.

The loss of that wicket did little to stem the flow of runs. Josh Smith joined Matt Beeby and struck a brisk 22 not out from 17 deliveries, ensuring the hosts finished on a formidable total. Seven Sonning bowlers were used by skipper Arun Raghavendra, but none could claim a wicket from their own bowling. Affan Tak endured a particularly difficult spell, conceding 23 runs from his solitary over, which included four no-balls. Ali Hussaini (4-0-29-0) and Moksha Suriarachchi (4-0-28-0) were the most economical of the attack, though even they went at more than seven runs per over. Eighteen extras further swelled the Gerrards Cross total.

Chasing 197 to win, Sonning needed a fast start but lost opener Kishan Akula for 9 in the early overs, trapped lbw by Joban Kullar with the score on just 10. That brought Dhiren Panchal to the crease, and he and Kanishka Suriarachchi steadied things with a partnership of 30 for the second wicket. Panchal struck two boundaries in his 12 before being caught by James Hampshire off the bowling of Dylan Smith with the score on 40.

Edward Jones came and went quickly, bowled by Amar Kandola for 8, and at 50 for 3 Sonning were already falling behind the required rate. Kanishka Suriarachchi found a willing ally in Bharat Rathod, and the pair added 36 for the fourth wicket to offer a glimmer of hope. Rathod hit two fours in his 14 before Kandola struck again to bowl him with the total on 86. Kandola finished as the pick of the Gerrards Cross bowlers with figures of 2 for 25 from his four overs.

The run chase effectively ended when Affan Tak was caught behind by Peter Westaway off Edward Beeby for 3, and Ali Hussaini was bowled for a duck by James Hampshire in quick succession, leaving Sonning reeling at 107 for 6. Throughout the collapse, Kanishka Suriarachchi remained the one constant, batting through the innings with composure and accumulating his runs sensibly. His unbeaten 47 from 53 balls, including three fours, was comfortably the most accomplished batting display from the visiting side. Captain Raghavendra provided some late impetus with an unbeaten 6 from 5 balls, but with three batsmen left unused, Sonning finished well adrift on 119 for 6.

The margin of defeat underlined the scale of the challenge that Matt Beeby's remarkable knock had set. On a day where Sonning's bowling lacked a cutting edge and too many batsmen fell cheaply in the chase, Kanishka Suriarachchi's resilient half-century effort stood as the sole significant consolation from a chastening afternoon in Gerrards Cross.
