Sharma's Unbeaten 148 Not Enough as Marlow Edge Home at King George's Field

Aahaan Sharma produced one of the innings of Sonning's season — an unbeaten 148 from 125 balls containing 29 boundaries — but even that monumental effort could not haul the Sunday 1s to a target of 252 against Marlow at King George's Field, the visitors holding on to win by 27 runs.

Marlow captain Reinhardt van der Merwe had no hesitation in batting first, and his side made the most of the decision, posting 251 all out in just 35.4 overs. Geethika Jyothis struck early, bowling Tom Whitaker for 7 with the opener having already found the rope once, and Shahbaz Ali trapped van der Merwe lbw for 21 to leave Marlow 44 for 2. When Shahbaz then bowled Matty Phillips for a single, Sonning had the visitors three down for 50 and a genuine grip on proceedings.

That grip lasted barely a session. Mohsin Khan, the Marlow wicketkeeper, counter-attacked with real intent, striking 13 fours in a 49-ball 62, and found a willing accomplice in Tarun Khare. Their fourth-wicket stand of 90 transformed the innings, taking the score from 50 to 140 and forcing Richard Skeil to rotate through his options. Khare's 44 from 42 balls included six fours and the only two sixes of the innings.

Aahaan Sharma answered the call with the ball as well as the bat. He removed Mohsin Khan lbw to break the partnership and returned to have Khare caught, before adding Alex Hutt bowled and Isaac Looker lbw to finish with the outstanding figures of 4 for 28 from 4.4 overs. Shahbaz Ali claimed 3 for 61, bowling Leo Hutt for 22, while Jyothis added a second scalp in accounting for Toby Hutt and Kishan Akula had Mark Hutt stumped by Yusuf Malik. Marlow's lower order contributed handsomely nonetheless — Toby Hutt 21, Leo Hutt 22, Mark Hutt 18 and a rapid 19 from nine balls by Looker — as the last five wickets added exactly 100.

Sonning's reply began in disastrous fashion. Richard Skeil edged the first ball he faced from Isaac Looker to Tom Whitaker, Neil Jasti was caught behind by Mohsin Khan off Tarun Khare, and Jacob Fitton was run out by the same keeper without scoring. At 3 for 3 inside the opening exchanges, the chase looked over before it had begun.

What followed was a masterclass in defiance. Sharma, batting at three, simply refused to be dislodged, driving and cutting with relentless precision while wickets tumbled at the other end. William Travers dug in for 28 balls to help add 36 for the fourth wicket, and after Elliot Gray was bowled first ball of consequence, Kishan Akula stayed for 23 deliveries in a stand of 35. Shahbaz Ali contributed to a 41-run seventh-wicket partnership and Yusuf Malik another 25 for the eighth, but each time Sharma was left to shoulder the burden alone.

Toby Hutt was the pick of the Marlow attack with 2 for 11 from his five overs, with Looker (1-16) and Khare (1-8 from five, including two maidens) equally miserly at the top. Sonning were also gifted 28 extras, 22 of them wides, but the required rate crept steadily beyond reach. Sharma passed his century and kept going, taking the total to 224 for 8 by the close of the 40th over, with Idris Malik unbeaten on a stubborn 15 from 26 balls at the other end.

Marlow's total, built on Mohsin Khan's rapid half-century and sustained lower-order contributions, ultimately proved the difference on a ground where 251 was always going to demand something extraordinary. Sharma very nearly provided it.
