U11 Sharks Claim Comfortable Victory Over Taplow at Reading Blue Coat School
Sonning U11 Sharks posted 88 for 5 from their 16 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat in this U11 T16 Pairs league fixture at Reading Blue Coat School on 2nd July 2023. A disciplined bowling performance then restricted Taplow to 69 for 6, securing a deserved 19-run victory for the home side.
Extras played a significant role in shaping the Sonning innings, with 47 of the team's 88 runs coming without the bat being involved. Taplow's bowlers struggled for consistency, conceding 18 wides and 16 no-balls across the 16 overs. Louis Manly was the most wayward, leaking 20 runs from his three overs with eight wides, while Tom York's two overs cost 18 runs. The one shining light for the visitors was captain Noah Whyte, who delivered an outstanding spell of 3-4 from his three overs, proving difficult for the Sonning batters to get away.
Among the Sonning batting line-up, Arnav Basumatary top-scored with 10 runs from 12 balls, showing the most fluency at the crease. Captain Vayun Sori contributed 7 from 16 deliveries at the top of the order, while Monty Thomas matched that total from 15 balls, striking the only boundary of the Sonning innings. Mitul Kalidindi added a useful 5 from his 12 balls in a disciplined effort.
In reply, Taplow needed to bat with ambition but found runs hard to come by against a tight Sonning attack. Captain Noah Whyte was the standout performer for the visitors, scoring 23 from 24 balls with three fours, carrying the fight almost single-handedly. His was comfortably the highest individual score of the match and kept Taplow in contention for a spell.
However, Whyte received insufficient support from his teammates. Max Brenan, Ted Jacobs, and Ike Murray each managed 6 runs, but Tom York could only muster 2 from 14 balls as the required rate climbed beyond reach. The regular fall of wickets — six in total — applied constant pressure to the Taplow batting order.
The Sonning bowling effort was a genuine team performance, with four bowlers claiming wickets. Logan Powell was the most effective, taking 2 for 7 from his two overs to apply early pressure. Mitul Kalidindi delivered a miserly spell of 1 for 2 from two overs, including a maiden — an impressive feat at this age group. Arnav Basumatary backed up his batting contribution with 1 for 7, while Elijah Patel chipped in with 1 for 10. Notably, the Sonning bowlers conceded no no-balls throughout the entire innings, a marked contrast to Taplow's struggles with the white line.
Captain Vayun Sori led from the front with the ball as well, keeping things tight with figures of 0 for 9 from three economical overs at the top of the innings. The collective discipline of the Sharks' attack meant Taplow were never able to build the momentum needed, falling 19 runs short as Sonning claimed a well-earned 20 league points.
