Spartans Post 155 Before Vinudi's Five-Wicket Haul Seals Comfortable Victory
Sonning U13 Spartans secured a comprehensive 24-run victory over Welford Park at Knowl Hill CC in their BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 2) West fixture, posting 155 for 5 before bowling out the visitors for 131 in 19.2 overs.
Welford Park won the toss and inserted the Spartans, but the decision backfired as captain Finley Andrews and Aarib Ansari put on an excellent opening stand of 64. Andrews struck two fours in his brisk 23 from 25 balls before being bowled by Welford Park skipper Olly Paphitis, but Ansari continued to anchor the innings with a composed 30 from 45 deliveries, including one boundary, before retiring not out.
A brief wobble saw Daniel Moseley caught by Charlie Quaintance-Blackford off Harry Paphitis for a duck, but Raenu Babu steadied the ship emphatically. Babu's 20 from just 17 balls, peppered with three fours, formed the centrepiece of a crucial 59-run third-wicket partnership with Vinudi Jayawardana Weerasinghe, who contributed a patient 6 not out from 20 balls. Izaan Baloch added a useful cameo of 9 from 7 balls late in the innings. Welford Park's bowling lacked discipline throughout, conceding 65 extras — including 35 wides and 28 no-balls — which inflated the Spartans' total significantly.
Welford Park's chase began promisingly as opener Alfie Mabey took the attack to the Sonning bowling. Mabey struck four fours and a six in an aggressive 29 from 25 balls, sharing a 68-run opening partnership with Quaintance-Blackford, who contributed 13 from 36 balls at the other end. At 68 for 0, Welford Park appeared well placed in the run chase.
The game turned decisively when Fawaz Attiq broke through to bowl Mabey. Rory Taylor added 8 in a 21-run second-wicket stand with Quaintance-Blackford, but once Divik Gupta bowled Taylor for 8, Welford Park's middle order crumbled. Harry Paphitis fell for 1 and Quaintance-Blackford was dismissed for 13, leaving the visitors reeling at 91 for 4.
Jayawardana Weerasinghe then produced a remarkable spell that effectively ended the contest. Bowling with accuracy that belied the general looseness of both attacks, the Spartans all-rounder claimed five wickets for just 8 runs from two overs, dismissing Quaintance-Blackford, Harry Paphitis, Olly Paphitis (10), Hugh Taylor (0) and Noah Horton (0) to rip through the middle and lower order. The collapse from 89 for 1 to 106 for 7 was devastating, with Welford Park losing six wickets for just 18 runs.
Harry Baines showed some resistance with 10 from 16 balls in a brief partnership with Tommy Salisbury, but Baloch had Baines caught to claim the ninth wicket at 131, bringing the innings to a close 24 runs short of the target. Nikhil Oruganti also chipped in with 1 for 19 from his two overs. The victory was built on disciplined batting, a crucial opening partnership and Jayawardana Weerasinghe's extraordinary five-wicket haul — a match-winning performance that turned a competitive chase into a comfortable Spartans triumph.
