Sharks Struggle with the Bat as Reading Claim Comfortable Victory
Sonning U11 Sharks won the toss and opted to field first in this BYCL Under 11 T16 Pairs league fixture on 12 May, but were unable to contain Reading's batters before finding run-scoring desperately difficult in their own innings.
Reading posted an imposing total of 131 from their 20 overs, with contributions spread across the batting order. Vihaan Aravind top-scored with 16 off just 10 balls, while opener Janardhan Kode struck 15 off 11 deliveries, including the only boundary of the innings. Arjun Dosanjh added a brisk 13 off eight balls, and both Pragnan Chengalva (12 off 9) and captain Sahib Singh Khatter (12 off 7) chipped in handy runs. Extras proved a significant factor in Reading's total, with 63 added — 60 of those coming from wides — underscoring the challenge Sonning's young bowlers faced in finding their line.
The standout bowling performance for the Sharks came from Ethan Cawsey, whose exceptional two overs yielded just a single run and a wicket — comfortably the most economical spell of the innings. Heet Panchal also impressed, taking 1-13 from his two overs without conceding a wide. Divik Gupta claimed a wicket but proved expensive, going for 22 off two overs, while Rudra Dagar's three overs cost 32, including 10 wides.
Chasing 132 for victory, the Sharks' innings never gained any momentum. Reading's bowling attack was disciplined throughout, with Janardhan Kode delivering a remarkable spell of 2-0 from two overs — both of which were maidens. Indrajit Nandakumar was equally impressive, claiming 2-3 from his two overs with a maiden to boot. Captain Arjun Dosanjh added 2-8 from three overs as Reading's bowlers strangled Sonning's scoring.
Rudra Dagar and Diyaan Monga were the only Sharks batters to reach double figures, each making 10 runs, though both were dismissed twice in the pairs format. Jude Alden, Aarib Ansari, Owen Simmons, Ethan Cawsey, and Mitul Kalidindi each contributed five runs, but with captain Eleanor Hatchett-Walker, Heet Panchal, and Divik Gupta all failing to score, the innings total fell well short.
Sonning's reply finished on just 71, with only 45 runs coming from the bat and 26 from extras — a stark contrast to Reading's total. The nine Sonning dismissals, at a cost of five runs each in the pairs format, proved decisive in widening the gap between the two sides.
Reading's well-rounded team performance, with both bat and ball, proved far too strong for the Sharks on the day. For Sonning, Cawsey's outstanding bowling spell and Dagar's all-round effort with bat and ball were positive takeaways from an otherwise difficult afternoon.
