Match Report
Eagles Undone by Bracknell's Middle-Order Power at Bracknell Cricket Club
Sonning U9 Eagles were comprehensively beaten by Bracknell in their U9 Super 8s – East league fixture on 25 June 2023, posting just 63 runs before the hosts powered to 146 in reply at Bracknell Cricket Club. Bracknell won the toss and inserted the Eagles, a decision that proved inspired as their disciplined bowling attack restricted Sonning throughout the 20-over innings.
Captain Alexander Hatchett-Walker top-scored for the Eagles with 13 off 17 balls, striking two fours in the most fluent batting display of the Sonning innings. Daniel Gomez contributed 8 from 14 deliveries, including a boundary, while Ranbir Setia matched that tally with 8 off 13 balls. Beyond those three, however, runs proved extremely difficult to come by against a well-organised Bracknell attack.
The Bracknell bowlers shared the wickets impressively, with Aasim Mohammad the pick of the attack, returning outstanding figures of 2-0-4-3 to rip through the Eagles' middle order. Sansar Sewak claimed 2 for 10 from his two overs, while Kabir Gabba also struck twice, conceding just 5 runs. Kabir Verma was miserly in the extreme, bowling two maiden overs without conceding a single run. In all, Bracknell took 11 Sonning wickets, with the five-run dismissal penalty contributing significantly to the Eagles' modest total of 63.
Bracknell's reply started steadily rather than spectacularly, with their top five batters accumulating 18 runs between them. Alexander Green made an early breakthrough for the Eagles, taking 1 for 16 from three overs, while Daniel Gomez also claimed a wicket with figures of 1 for 14 from two overs. Jasper Hawkins picked up the third Bracknell wicket, though his three overs proved expensive at 36 runs.
The match was transformed by a devastating display from Dalair Sewak, who smashed an extraordinary 39 off just 14 balls. His innings contained eight fours and a six, an assault that left the Sonning bowlers with nowhere to hide. Kabir Gabba provided powerful support with 20 from 15 balls, including two fours and a six of his own, as Bracknell's middle and lower order turned what had been a controlled chase into a runaway victory.
Sansar Sewak added 15 off 12 balls and captain Aishu Meganathan chipped in with 12 from 12 deliveries as Bracknell batted aggressively throughout their innings. The Eagles' extras column told its own story, with 28 wides and 4 no-balls contributing 36 extras to Bracknell's total — more than half of Sonning's entire score.
Despite the heavy defeat, there were positives for the Eagles to take forward. Arjun Chirunamala bowled tidily, conceding 12 from two overs, while Elijah Patterson kept things relatively tight with 8 from his two overs. With the bat, the contributions of Hatchett-Walker, Gomez, and Setia showed that runs are available when the Eagles play with intent and positive footwork.
