Sonning 3rd XI Overwhelmed as Theale and Tilehurst Rack Up Record-Breaking 455
Sonning 3rd XI endured a punishing afternoon at Knowl Hill as Theale and Tilehurst amassed a mammoth 455 for 4 from their 45 overs before bowling out the hosts for just 143 in reply, securing a comprehensive victory in this Division 7A encounter.
Theale and Tilehurst captain James Coker won the toss and chose to bat, a decision that proved inspired as opener Nazeem Hussain produced a devastating unbeaten 166 from 131 balls, lacing 16 fours and clearing the boundary six times. Hussain anchored the innings from first ball to last, finding willing partners throughout as the Sonning attack was put to the sword on a day the bowlers would rather forget.
After Khuram Akram fell for 13, caught off the bowling of Shahbaz Ali, Jacob Stoner struck a breezy 32 from just 20 deliveries before Edward McLoughlin had him caught. The real carnage, however, came when Rob Why joined Hussain at the crease. Why blazed 133 from 84 balls in an astonishing display of power hitting, smashing 14 fours and eight sixes before McLoughlin claimed his second wicket of the afternoon. McLoughlin finished as Sonning's most economical frontline bowler with 2 for 68, though even those figures reflected the scale of the visitors' onslaught.
George Coker continued the assault with a rapid 51 off just 22 balls, launching six sixes during his brief stay before Yusuf Alikhan removed him. The extras column told its own story, with 54 additional runs — including 34 wides — further swelling the total. Captain Sam Taylor's nine overs for 50 without a wicket were the most economical of Sonning's attack, while Alikhan (1-109) and Ali (1-96) bore the brunt of the punishment. Elliot Gray conceded 74 from six overs and Alexander Fleming went for 43 in three as the bowling unit struggled for any sustained control.
Facing an impossible target of 456, Sonning's reply began with intent as Hugo Popplewell struck 21 from 18 balls, including a six, before falling caught off Shehroz Ahmed. The innings quickly lurched into crisis when Sahan Tampoe was caught off Adrees Shaheen for a duck and Sanvi Myadam was trapped lbw by the same bowler for nought, leaving the hosts reeling at three wickets down with barely a run on the board from the top order.
Alexander Fleming provided the most spirited resistance of the Sonning innings, counter-attacking with five sixes and two fours in a defiant 47 from 31 balls. He put on a useful stand with McLoughlin, who contributed 20 from 23 deliveries, but once Fleming was caught off Bilal Naeem, the writing was firmly on the wall. Wicketkeeper Kyle Dellar-Law made 13 from 26 balls in an attempt to show some resolve, while Shahbaz Ali matched Popplewell's tally of 21 with an entertaining knock that included two fours and a six.
The lower order offered little further resistance as Theale and Tilehurst's bowlers shared the wickets around efficiently. Bilal Naeem was particularly effective with 2 for 20 from five overs, while Jibran Naeem wrapped up the tail with 2 for 4 from just 1.4 overs. Shaheen's early double strike of 2 for 37 had set the tone, and skipper James Coker chipped in with 1 for 1 from his single over. Sonning were bowled out for 143 in 22.4 overs, losing by 312 runs in a match that represented a chastening afternoon for Taylor's side in the Division 7A campaign.
