Match Report

Sabres Fall Short at Kings Field as Wargrave Claim Victory Despite Spirited Batting Display

Sonning U11 Sabres travelled to Kings Field on Friday evening for their BYCL Under 11 Challenge fixture against Wargrave, and despite posting a competitive total of 117, were unable to defend it as the hosts chased down the target to finish on 102 for 6 in the pairs format, claiming the 20 points on offer.

Inserted after Wargrave won the toss and chose to field, the Sabres found run-scoring difficult in the early overs. Alexander Hatchett-Walker opened with a steady 6 from 13 balls, but Harrison Kidd struggled at the other end, managing no runs from 11 deliveries and falling twice. Arjun Chirunamala provided the first real impetus in the middle order, striking 15 from 17 balls, though he was dismissed three times in the process, highlighting both his attacking intent and the quality of the Wargrave bowling.

The innings was punctuated by a brilliant spell from Wargrave captain Benjamin Tilley, who claimed five wickets from his three overs while conceding just 15 runs. His control stood in stark contrast to some of his teammates, with Arthur Haynes sending down 11 wides and Leo Jolly conceding eight in their respective spells. Horatio Hick also impressed, bowling a maiden and taking 2 for 6 from his two overs, while Bear Holdship picked up 2 for 6 as well.

The Sabres' innings was rescued by contributions from the lower order. Oscar Williams played fluently for his 12 from 12 balls, while Savraj Sall added a useful 8 despite being dismissed three times. The standout performance came from Zain Baloch, who struck a rapid 17 from just 10 deliveries batting at number ten, ensuring the Sabres posted a total well above par. A significant 44 extras, including 26 wides, also bolstered the scoreboard considerably.

Defending 117, Sonning's bowlers made an excellent start. Seve Horton bowled a maiden in his opening spell, finishing with figures of 0 for 6 from two overs, while Sebastian Cook was equally parsimonious with 0 for 5. Arjun Chirunamala continued his fine individual performance with the ball, claiming a wicket while conceding only four runs from his two overs. The early Wargrave batsmen were kept firmly in check, with Arthur Haynes scoreless from 14 balls and Alex Kosoric managing just 2 from 10.

Jonathan Turner emerged as the Sabres' most effective wicket-taker, claiming 2 for 11 from three overs including a maiden, while Alexander Hatchett-Walker also bowled impressively with 1 for 7 from two overs and a maiden of his own. However, the Wargrave middle and lower order proved too strong. Krithik Nowduru top-scored with 17 from 14 balls, before captain Benjamin Tilley anchored the chase with an unbeaten 19 from 16 deliveries. Raffi Prideaux added 14, Horatio Hick struck a brisk 12 from just 8 balls, and both Aryan Sharma and Leo Jolly contributed 11 apiece.

The Sabres' bowling discipline wavered in the closing overs as Wargrave's experienced batsmen took control. Captain Niko Jordinson and Harrison Kidd conceded 16 and 17 respectively from their two-over spells, allowing Wargrave to reach 102 for 6 — enough to claim victory in the pairs format where the lower total of wickets lost proved decisive alongside the run tally. Despite the defeat, the Sabres can take heart from several encouraging individual displays, particularly from Zain Baloch with the bat and the economical bowling of Chirunamala, Hatchett-Walker, and Turner.
