Spartans Post Commanding 35-Run Victory as Batsmen Share the Spoils at Knowl Hill

Sonning U13 Spartans delivered a polished all-round display to defeat Holyport by 35 runs in their BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 1) North East fixture at Knowl Hill on 17 May. After being asked to bat first by Holyport captain Rohan Dephu, the Spartans posted an imposing 172 for 3 from their 20 overs before bowling the visitors out for 137 in 19.3 overs.

The Spartans' innings was built on contributions throughout the order, with no fewer than four batsmen retiring not out after reaching useful scores. Opener Archie Jansen set the tone with an aggressive 22 from just 12 balls, striking two fours and a six before being bowled by Aveer Singh. He and Jude Alden put on 41 for the first wicket, giving the home side early momentum. Alden continued to bat fluently, accumulating 25 from 18 deliveries with four boundaries before retiring.

Heet Panchal matched Alden's tally of 25, his innings the most boundary-laden of the day with five fours from 16 balls. Captain Anay Patel contributed a measured 18 from 25 balls, while Ethan Cawsey added 13 in a steady knock that helped maintain the scoreboard's relentless progress. Abbubakar Waseem chipped in with a brisk 9 from six balls before falling bowled to Darcy Rusher. A second-wicket partnership of 64 between Waseem and Patel proved particularly valuable, taking the score from 41 to 105 and breaking the back of the Holyport attack.

Holyport's bowling was undermined by extras, with 52 runs conceded in sundries — 31 wides and 21 no-balls across the innings. Abi T's two overs proved the most expensive, leaking 21 runs including nine wides and nine no-balls. Rusher was the pick of the Holyport attack with 2-0-18-1, while captain Dephu claimed the other wicket, having Tavish Malik caught for 4.

The visitors' reply started disastrously. Theo Korff fell for 1 in the fourth over, bowled by Heet Panchal, and Anna Mallett followed for a duck, caught by Tavish Malik off his own bowling to leave Holyport 8 for 2. From that precarious position, Darcy Rusher and Rohan Dephu launched an impressive counter-attack, putting on 59 for the third wicket. Rusher struck three fours in a well-constructed 29 from 28 balls, providing the perfect foil for the more aggressive Dephu.

Dephu was magnificent in a losing cause, finishing unbeaten on 56 from 39 balls with four fours and four sixes. His was a true captain's innings, but he simply ran out of partners. Once Rusher was caught by Archie Jansen off Oscar Tann's bowling with the score on 101 for 9, Holyport's hopes effectively ended. Dephu added 36 with Aveer Singh for the last wicket, but the target remained beyond reach.

The Spartans' bowling effort was a genuine team performance, with wickets shared across the attack. Tavish Malik was the standout, claiming 2 for 12 from his two overs, including the key scalps of Mallett and Ethan Price. Heet Panchal was the most economical, conceding just 4 runs from two overs while dismissing Korff. Captain Anay Patel, Abbubakar Waseem, Ashwin Ravichandran, Oscar Tann, and Jude Alden all contributed a wicket apiece, while Ethan Cawsey produced a sharp piece of fielding to run out Mohammad Ahmed. The comprehensive victory earned Sonning a full 20 league points.
