Match Report
Scorchers Post 168 to Secure Victory Over Kidmore End
Sonning U13 Scorchers produced a commanding batting display to post 168 for 5 from their 20 overs before restricting Kidmore End to 132 for 5 in a U13 League Pool 8 fixture on 22 May. After being asked to bat first following Kidmore End's decision to field at the toss, the Scorchers capitalised on a generous extras tally and several strong individual contributions to set a target that ultimately proved beyond their opponents.
The Scorchers' innings got off to an uncertain start when George Rothermel fell for just 3, bowled by Ali Syed with the score on only 4. That early setback, however, brought together Joseph Dowse and Shubh Vedalankar, who combined for a crucial second-wicket partnership of 55 runs. Vedalankar was particularly aggressive, striking six fours in a fluent 28 from 20 balls before being bowled by Sumay Minnaar. Dowse anchored the innings superbly, compiling 31 from 30 deliveries, including four boundaries, before retiring not out having given Sonning the platform they needed.
Ibrahim Ali Mir contributed a brisk 7, which included a towering six, adding 29 for the third wicket alongside Dowse before falling to Freddie Syms. When Charlie Bright was dismissed for 1, the Scorchers were 108 for 4, but captain Eshan Wang Kumar and Saurav Sivaram then put together the innings' most significant stand. The pair added 53 for the fifth wicket, with Wang Kumar striking four fours in an enterprising 21 off 17 balls before being trapped lbw by Tom Roach. Sivaram remained unbeaten on 19 from 28 balls, ensuring the Scorchers finished strongly. The Kidmore End bowlers struggled with their discipline throughout, conceding 57 extras — 43 of which were wides — with Ashlesh Bairy (0-23 from 2 overs, including 11 wides) and Dylan Cox (0-24, with 10 wides and 4 no-balls) the most expensive.
Kidmore End's reply started with real intent, however, as Freddie Syms and Harry Devanny steadied things before Sumay Minnaar arrived to form a threatening first-wicket partnership. Minnaar and Devanny put on a formidable opening stand of 95, largely built on the back of Devanny's aggressive 25 from 29 balls, featuring three fours, and Minnaar's composed 16 from 22 deliveries. At 95 without loss, Kidmore End appeared well in the hunt.
The game turned decisively when Ibrahim Ali Mir broke through, bowling Minnaar to end the stand. Devanny followed shortly afterwards, run out with the score on 99, and suddenly Kidmore End had lost two wickets for four runs. The momentum had shifted firmly in Sonning's favour. Joseph Dowse then had Dylan Cox caught by George Rothermel for 1, and Tom Hughes was run out for 2, leaving Kidmore End reeling at 124 for 4.
Frederick Parkes applied the final blow, having Tom Roach caught by Shubh Vedalankar for 13 to leave Kidmore End 131 for 5. Although Roach had played usefully with two fours in his 23-ball stay, the middle order simply could not keep up with the required rate after the opening partnership was broken. Taran Prasad finished unbeaten on 2 as Kidmore End closed on 132 for 5, falling 36 runs short of the target.
Siddharth Kumar deserves particular credit with the ball, delivering a miserly spell of 2-1-3-0 that helped build early pressure. Ibrahim Ali Mir's figures of 2-1-8-1 were equally impressive, combining economy with the vital breakthrough of Minnaar. The Scorchers shared the bowling workload across ten bowlers, though like their opponents, they were not immune to extras, conceding 64 in total. Nevertheless, it was a comprehensive all-round performance from Sonning, with Dowse's batting and the key fifth-wicket partnership between Sivaram and Wang Kumar proving the difference between the two sides.
