Match Report

Jyothis Demolishes Binfield as Sonning Women Cruise to Comprehensive Victory

Sonning Women's 1st XI produced a dominant all-round display to sweep aside Binfield at Holyport CC on 9th August, bowling the hosts out for just 41 before chasing down the target without loss in a little over six overs.

Binfield captain Jessica Jackson won the toss and chose to bat, but her side found themselves immediately under siege from Sonning's opening bowlers. Geethika Jyothis delivered a spell of extraordinary quality, returning figures of 4-2 from her four overs, three of which were maidens. She struck early to remove Holly McFarlane for a duck before dismantling the middle order in devastating fashion. Michelle Slaughter, Katy Slaughter, and Lisa Jones all fell to Jyothis without scoring, the latter two departing in quick succession as Binfield collapsed from 4-2 to 9-5.

At the other end, Belle Myers was equally miserly, conceding just seven runs from her four overs while claiming the wicket of Alison Wade, who also departed without troubling the scorers. The pair's combined opening spell of 4-9 from eight overs left Binfield in tatters.

Grace Phillips then entered the attack and made an immediate impact, trapping Lucy Jeffery lbw for one and bowling Vinudi Jayawardana Weerasinghe for a duck in consecutive deliveries to leave the hosts reeling at 18-7. Chloe Bailey picked up the wicket of Jules Andrews, who had battled through 10 balls without scoring, and Yasmin Shaukat wrapped up proceedings by bowling Gosia Hopley to leave Binfield 41-9 from 13.5 overs.

Jackson was the sole beacon of resistance for the home side, carrying her bat for an unbeaten 24 from 42 balls, striking four boundaries in a lone hand that accounted for well over half of Binfield's total. Her effort, however, was rendered futile by the lack of support from the other end, where eight of her teammates failed to reach double figures and seven were dismissed for ducks.

The chase was a formality. Bailey, who had contributed with ball in hand earlier, opened the batting and struck a composed unbeaten 20 from 28 balls, finding the boundary twice. Shaukat provided steady support at the other end with eight not out from 12 deliveries. Binfield's bowling struggled for accuracy throughout, conceding 14 extras including 11 wides from just 6.1 overs as Sonning reached 42-0 with ease.

The scale of Sonning's dominance was underlined by the fact that nine of their eleven players were not required to bat. Captain Katie Barrows will be particularly pleased with the collective bowling effort, which saw six different bowlers used and all contributing to what was a thoroughly professional away performance in Division 3 A. The 20 league points earned strengthen Sonning's position as they continue their campaign in the Home Counties Women's Cricket League.
