Match Report
Sonning Sunday 1s Outclassed as Jimmy Wood's Century Steers Luddites to Commanding Victory
The Luddites inflicted a comprehensive defeat on Sonning Sunday 1s at King George's Field on 7th June, chasing down nothing as they batted first and posted an imposing 230 for 7 from their 35 overs before bowling the hosts out for just 75.
Captain Richard Skeil won the toss and inserted the visitors, but that decision quickly backfired as Jimmy Wood produced a magnificent innings of 101 not out from 106 balls, lacing 18 fours in a display of controlled aggression. Although Rupert W fell early — bowled by Robert Jones with the score on just 2 — Wood found an excellent partner in wicketkeeper David Maunder, and the pair put on a match-defining stand of 142 for the second wicket. Maunder contributed a fluent 35 from 51 balls before being caught by Jones off the bowling of Elliot Gray.
Jones was Sonning's standout performer with the ball, returning figures of 2 for 22 from seven overs, including three maidens. He accounted for Rupert W and Giles Pemberton in quick succession, and the score briefly stuttered from 144 to 150 for 4. Young Aahaan Sharma also bowled with impressive economy, conceding just five runs from three overs with two maidens, though he went wicketless.
Moksha Suriarachchi picked up two wickets — trapping Tim Wood lbw and bowling Sahil Dutta — while Kishan Akula had Martin Thomas caught by Jones for a duck. However, 44 extras, including 29 byes, proved costly and allowed the Luddites to accelerate in the closing overs. D Jhanji smashed an unbeaten 19 from just nine balls, striking four fours, while captain David Oakley remained not out on 20, ensuring the visitors finished with a formidable total.
Sonning's reply never gained any traction. D Jhanji struck with the new ball to remove opener Aahaan Sharma for a duck in the third ball of the innings, and the hosts were immediately on the back foot. Skeil and Jones steadied things briefly with a partnership of 30 for the second wicket, the captain hitting three fours in his 16 before Jhanji had him caught by Manish Sharma.
Jones top-scored for Sonning with 22 from 26 balls, but his departure at 43 for 3 triggered a dramatic collapse. Manish Sharma bowled Bharat Rathod for a golden duck to make it 43 for 4, and Rupert W then tore through the middle order, claiming 3 for 23 from seven overs, including the wickets of Moksha Suriarachchi, Kanishka Suriarachchi and Kishan Akula. Sonning slumped from 43 for 3 to 48 for 6 in short order.
Daniel Bailey showed some belated resistance, grinding out 11 from 30 balls in a ninth-wicket stand with Qasim Anwar that added 14 runs, but it was merely delaying the inevitable. Sahil Dutta eventually had Bailey caught by Rupert W, and with Partha Pal unable to bat, Sonning's innings closed at 75 for 9 from 22.3 overs — falling 155 runs short of the target. Manish Sharma finished with the outstanding figures of 3 for 11 from seven overs, complementing Rupert W's three-wicket haul in a dominant bowling display from the visitors.
