Match Report

Oscar Williams Dazzles with 37 but Spartans Fall Short at Boyne Hill

Sonning U11 Spartans travelled to Boyne Hill for this BYCL Under 11 Challenge (Tier 1) North East fixture on 24th July, and despite a sensational batting display from Oscar Williams, captain Alexander Green's side were unable to overturn the hosts' total in a match defined by extras and fluctuating momentum.

Having won the toss and elected to field, the Spartans set about their task with energy. Boyne Hill's batting was a collective rather than individual effort, with Oliver Morgan (11 off 13 balls) and Harrison Bradley (11 off 12) the joint top-scorers for the home side. Captain Logan Richards chipped in with 10 off 14 deliveries, while Dan Shuttleworth added a brisk 7 off just 8 balls. No Boyne Hill batter truly dominated, but they rarely needed to — a staggering 60 extras, including 28 wides and 21 byes, inflated their total to 107 for 4 from their 20 overs.

The Spartans' bowling was a mixed bag. Reeva Desai was the standout performer with the ball, returning outstanding figures of 3-1-4-1, conceding just four runs from three overs while also bowling a maiden. Oscar Williams was equally impressive in his shorter spell, taking 1 for 7 from two overs, and Anay Goswami kept things tight with 0 for 4 from his two overs. Alexander Green bowled three overs including a maiden, conceding just nine runs off the bat though seven wides proved costly. Jonathan Turner picked up a wicket for 13 runs. At the other end, Svarup Huggi struggled for his line and length, conceding 21 runs from two overs including nine wides and six no-balls, which gave Boyne Hill significant impetus through the middle overs.

The Spartans' reply got off to a flying start thanks to an extraordinary innings from Oscar Williams. The opener smashed 37 off just 18 deliveries, striking six boundaries in a devastating display that immediately put Sonning on the front foot. Williams took a particular liking to the opening bowlers Hugo Parsons (0-24 from two overs) and Harrison Bradley (0-19 from two overs), racing the score along at a remarkable rate.

Alexander Green provided useful support at the other end with a quick-fire 6 off 6 balls, but once the top-order fireworks subsided, the Spartans' middle order found runs far harder to come by. Yutika Reddy Akula managed just 1 from 8 balls, while Reeva Desai, following up an excellent bowling spell, could only muster 2 from 16 deliveries as Boyne Hill's bowlers tightened their grip. Logan Richards was the key figure for the hosts, the captain claiming 2 for 5 from his two overs, while Maxim Fullerton also proved difficult to score from, taking 2 for 4.

Savraj Sall briefly threatened with 8 off 11 balls including a four, and Svarup Huggi showed determination with 11 from 20 deliveries lower down the order. However, wickets continued to tumble — both Huggi and Edward Heath were dismissed twice under the pairs format, and Anay Goswami also fell twice, with the Spartans losing nine wickets in total. The 44 extras in the Sonning innings, while substantial, were not enough to compensate for the regular loss of wickets.

Despite finishing on 116, nine runs more than Boyne Hill's total of 107, the pairs scoring format — where five runs are deducted per dismissal — proved decisive. The Spartans' nine wickets cost them 45 runs in penalties compared to Boyne Hill's four dismissals costing just 20, and it was this differential that ultimately handed the home side victory. Williams' magnificent knock and Desai's miserly bowling were undoubted highlights for Sonning, but the inability to bat through without regular wickets proved the critical difference in this closely fought encounter.
