Match Report

Murphy and Anilkumar Steer U15 Scorchers to Commanding Nine-Wicket Victory at Stonor

Sonning U15 Scorchers produced a clinical all-round display to defeat Henley by nine wickets in the U15 Performance League Pool 4 fixture at Stonor CC on Wednesday evening. Captain Max Murphy led from the front with both ball and bat, while Sid Anilkumar anchored the chase with an unbeaten 40 as the visitors reached their target with an over to spare.

Henley, having won the toss and elected to bat, found themselves in early difficulty against a disciplined Sonning attack. Murphy struck twice in his opening spell, first having Atharv Gupta caught by Ollie Terry for 15 and then bowling Jethro Kock for 6, while at the other end Jack Durrant was equally impressive. Durrant's four overs yielded just 12 runs and two wickets, including a maiden, as he removed wicketkeeper George Piercy — also caught by the busy Terry — for 5 and captain Rowan Garfath-Nebbett for just 2, caught by Ethan Towner.

At 40 for 4, Henley were in real trouble and needed a recovery. Laurie Tate and Joshua Ellison steadied matters with a partnership of 26 for the fifth wicket, but Tate was bowled by Henry Johnson for 14 to leave the hosts still well short of a competitive total at 66 for 5.

From there, Ellison and Raiph Surplice produced the most productive stand of the innings. Ellison batted with composure throughout, finishing unbeaten on 34 from 41 balls with four boundaries, while Surplice was the more aggressive partner, striking 21 from just 12 deliveries including a six and a four. Their unbroken sixth-wicket partnership hauled Henley to 122 for 5 from their 20 overs, a total boosted by 25 extras — 12 of which came in wides, an area the Scorchers' bowlers will want to tighten up.

The Sonning reply got off to a brisk start as openers Sid Anilkumar and Harrison Lott put on 39 for the first wicket. Lott was the early aggressor, cracking four fours in his 27 from 26 balls before being caught by George Piercy off Henley skipper Garfath-Nebbett's bowling.

That dismissal at 39 for 1 brought Murphy to the crease, and the Scorchers captain proceeded to take the game away from the hosts. Murphy struck four fours and two sixes in a fluent 47 not out from 44 balls, while Anilkumar continued to accumulate with calm authority at the other end. Anilkumar's unbeaten 40 from 44 balls included four fours and a six of his own, and the pair's unbroken second-wicket partnership of 86 was the decisive passage of the match.

Henley cycled through six bowlers in search of a breakthrough, but none could separate the pair. Garfath-Nebbett's four overs for 21 and one wicket represented the best return, while Toby Oseman's two economical overs for just 8 runs offered some resistance. It was not enough, however, as the Scorchers cruised to 125 for 1 in 19 overs, securing the win and five league points in convincing fashion.
