Sonning 4th XI Overwhelmed as Crowthorne & Crown Wood Post Mammoth 365 at Edgbarrow

Sonning 4th XI's decision to field first after winning the toss at Edgbarrow School backfired spectacularly as Crowthorne & Crown Wood amassed a commanding 365 for 4 from their 40 overs in this Division 9C encounter. Despite a valiant 70 from Peeush Bajpai in the reply, Sonning were bowled out for 146 in 29.2 overs, suffering a comprehensive defeat.

Crowthorne opener Nikunj Mehta set the tone from the outset, striking 94 from 86 balls with 16 fours and a six. He and Andrew Line (17) put on 76 for the first wicket before Pranoy Ramankandath made the breakthrough, finding the edge to claim a catch. The dismissal did little to stem the flow of runs, however, as Joe Robinson joined Mehta and the pair added a devastating 133 for the second wicket. Robinson was particularly brutal through the offside, rattling up 64 from just 47 deliveries with 13 boundaries before being caught by Siddharth Kumar off the bowling of Neel Kumar.

Mehta fell for 94 with the score on 256, bowled by Neel Kumar, who finished as Sonning's most effective bowler with 2 for 46 from his five overs. Yet the onslaught only intensified. Krunal Patel and captain Jake Gibbings shared an unbroken-looking fourth-wicket stand of 109 that took the total to dizzying heights. Patel was magnificent, blazing an unbeaten 83 from 46 balls with 14 fours and two sixes, while Gibbings clubbed 53 from 31 balls, clearing the boundary five times. Rish Bajpai eventually bowled Gibbings off the final ball of the innings, but by then the damage was done. Extras contributed 54 to the total, with 27 wides reflecting the difficulty Sonning's attack had in containing the home side.

Facing a monumental target of 366, Sonning's innings got off to the worst possible start when wicketkeeper Ishan Jithendriya was run out by Gurjai Singh for 2 with the score on just 10. Noah Darby then had Bharat Rathod caught by Nathan Elliot for 11, and in the same over bowled Rish Bajpai for a duck, leaving Sonning reeling at 36 for 3.

Peeush Bajpai was the one batsman who rose to the occasion. Coming in at number three, he counter-attacked superbly, striking 14 fours and a six in a fluent 70 from 66 balls. Captain Arun Raghavendra provided useful support with 31 from 43 balls, and together the pair added 86 for the fourth wicket to at least restore some respectability to the scorecard.

The partnership was broken when Bajpai was caught by Mehta off the bowling of Aran Long with the total on 122, and Sonning's resistance crumbled rapidly from that point. Raghavendra fell shortly after, caught by Alistair Warner-Rowley off Gurjai Singh, and the lower order had no answers. Nathan Elliot proved particularly miserly and effective, taking 2 for 6 from three overs with a maiden, while Darby finished with excellent figures of 3 for 14 from 5.2 overs. Shahbaz Ali, Neel Kumar and Pranoy Ramankandath all fell cheaply as Sonning lost their last six wickets for just 24 runs.

Neel Kumar's 2 for 46 stood out as the best of the Sonning bowling efforts, while Rish Bajpai's 1 for 38 from eight overs was the most economical. However, the total of 54 extras conceded — including 27 wides — underlined a difficult day in the field for Arun Raghavendra's side. The defeat leaves Sonning without any game points, though they collected four bonus points as small consolation from a chastening afternoon.
