Sonning 1st XI Frustrated as Reading Fixture Falls to Cancellation

Sonning's Division 1B clash against Reading at Sonning Lane on 29th August was cancelled, denying both sides the opportunity to contest what had promised to be a keenly anticipated league encounter.

Captain Peter Higginbottom had named a full-strength eleven for the trip to face Aditya Srinivasan's Reading side, with both teams sharing the points in a result that will have satisfied neither camp. The cancellation, recorded under the league's win-lose regulations, saw each side awarded seven points apiece.

Sonning had selected a well-balanced squad for the 50-over contest, with Robert Jones and Max Murphy set to open the batting and Muhammad Ayub providing experience in the top order. Danyal Ghazi, Shenul Widanapathirana, and Damario Goodman offered further depth through the middle order, while Dhruv Peshkar was due to take the gloves behind the stumps.

The bowling attack, featuring Mohammed Zahid, Alex Mcloughlin, and the ever-reliable Duncan Parr, would have fancied their chances against a Reading line-up that included Moin Khowaja, Praful Waghela, and Pav Chima in their top order.

Reading, captained by Aditya Srinivasan, had also assembled a competitive side with Salman Khalid, Samarth Manu, and Shiryar Ahmed bolstering the middle order, while wicketkeeper Amardeep Dosanjh and Nikhil Patil completed their eleven.

With no ball bowled, both sides were left to reflect on a missed opportunity in the Division 1B standings. The shared points from the cancellation could yet prove significant as the season enters its closing stages, with neither team able to gain ground on their rivals.
