Sonning 2nd XI Bowled Out for 88 as Taplow Cruise to Comprehensive Victory
Sonning 2nd XI endured a chastening afternoon at Ten Acres as Taplow chased down their modest total of 88 without losing a single wicket, wrapping up a dominant Division 4B victory in just 9.3 overs.
Having won the toss and inserted Sonning, Taplow's bowlers justified their captain's decision from the very first over. Opener Indeveer Sahota was caught by wicketkeeper Zeeshan Sarfraz Butt off the bowling of Naveed Akram without scoring, leaving the visitors immediately on the back foot at 0-1. Jameel Ahamed and captain Dan Anderson steadied matters with a second-wicket partnership of 20, but the recovery was short-lived when Ahamed fell caught off Summer Abbas for 8 from 26 balls.
Anderson dug in admirably, occupying the crease for 54 deliveries, and found a willing partner in Shamitha Widanapathirana, who played the most fluent innings of Sonning's afternoon. The pair added 24 for the third wicket before Anderson was bowled by Fahim Khan Neamat Ullah for 10. Widanapathirana continued to find the boundary with regularity, striking five fours in his 25 from 40 balls, but his run out at 61-5 effectively ended any realistic hopes of a competitive total.
Fahim Khan Neamat Ullah was the pick of the Taplow attack, returning figures of 3-22 from 8.5 overs, including the key wickets of Anderson and Robert Jones, who was bowled for a duck three balls into his innings. Hamza Ahmed proved equally destructive at the other end, taking 3-7 from four overs with a maiden, dismissing Akash Vasa, Sophie Smith and Ethan Towner in quick succession as the lower order crumbled. Junaid Khan's miserly spell of 5-3-5-0 also deserves mention for building relentless pressure during the early overs.
Paul Towner offered a brief flourish at number nine, cracking three fours in a brisk 12 from seven deliveries, but he was the last man dismissed — bowled by Fahim Khan Neamat Ullah — as Sonning were all out for 88 in 32.5 overs. Kavya Panchal contributed a patient 11 from 29 balls, but too many batters failed to reach double figures on a day when the visitors were unable to build any sustained momentum.
The chase was a formality, and Taplow's openers treated it as such. Khawaja Ahmed was imperious from the outset, smashing 44 not out from just 31 balls with five fours and a six. Summer Abbas matched his aggression at the other end, blazing 34 not out from 26 deliveries, including three fours and two sixes. Sonning's bowlers had no answer, with Jack Durrant conceding 37 from his four overs — including seven wides — and Robert Jones going for 30 from his four. Ethan Towner's solitary over disappeared for 17 as the target was reached without fuss.
The 10-wicket defeat leaves Sonning's 2nd XI with just three league points from the fixture, while Taplow collected the maximum 26 points to strengthen their position in Division 4B. For Dan Anderson's side, the inability to post a defendable score after being asked to bat first was the defining failure of the afternoon, compounded by an undisciplined bowling display that allowed the hosts to complete the job in under ten overs.
